Ferrari Dino 420

It's the supercar scoop of the year! Auto Express has had exclusive access to insider details and can now reveal all the details of the Italian legend?s most important new model of the decade. Yes, the Dino is back!

These pictures show the new Ferrari 420 Dino, which our sources in Italy have confirmed will go on sale in 2010. Despite being conceived more than two years ago, the whole project only got the green light in September, and is scheduled to be unveiled at a major motor show in 2009.

Taking the latter part of its name from Enzo Ferrari?s son, our contacts are confident that the eventual title will be ?420 Dino?, with the number referring to the V8 engine?s size.

Back in Italy, one fierce debate is still raging between Ferrari, Pininfarina ? the car?s designer ? and Ferrari?s owner, Fiat. While all indicators still lean toward the Dino being a coup?-cabriolet with a folding hard-top, some bosses would prefer to launch the entry-level model as a berlinetta hard-top GTB first, followed soon after by a targa GTS.

This would follow the trend set by the 246 Dino GT and GTS from 1968 and 1971, and the 308 GTB and GTS from 1975 and 1977.

Whatever is chosen, annual Dino production is figured to be anywhere between 3,500 and 5,000 cars, and Ferrari has actively sought partners to help lower and spread out the massive manufacturing costs. One company involved is aluminium specialist Alcoa, who will be making the spaceframe chassis in a new facility in Modena, Italy. The outer shell will be constructed from carbon fibre.

The new Dino started life as a Maserati in 2004. However, Ferrari?s then sister firm changed its plans, deciding to develop a luxurious Quattroporte-based coup? to rival the Mer.cedes CL instead. So Ferrari adopted the chassis and technology for the Dino.

Unlike the classic original, the newcomer will get a front-mounted V8. The unit is expected to be an all-aluminum 90-degree 4.2-litre unit with around 480bhp.

Inside, the Dino will be the first Ferrari to get standard-fit satellite navigation. The cabin promises to be practical, and alongside the carbon fibre trim shown, an aluminium finish will also be available. Transmission options haven?t been confirmed, but the paddleshifters are likely to control an automated manual.

Aimed squarely at Porsche?s 911 Turbo and Aston Martin?s V8 Vantage, the Dino will be priced between ?82,000 and ?90,000. This will make the Ferrari badge more accessible, but will also leave room for the F430 to move upmarket. We can also reveal plans to give that model a 550bhp 5.0-litre V10 by the end of 2008. An all-new replacement for the F430 is also already on the drawing board, and is scheduled for 2010.

It looks good.  Really good.  But, since it does look good, you can be sure it will be ugly by the time it's made.  It is a Ferrari afterall.

Replacement for the F430 in 2010! That's a little early.

I actually like it, I bet it does well.

J86

I'm kinda torn.  Soem angles (especially bow-on) look great, others look mildly awkward.  It almost looks too short...what size is this car again?

pommes-t

I just don't like Ferrari...

And I can't understand people who want a Ferrari and not a Porsche or a Lamborghini. Ferraris are real fast, but they aren't really high-speed reliable. A Porsche has been abused at the worst places of the world before it's built.

This one screams CAYMAN, but seems to be WAAAAY more expensive!

If I was rich as shit, I'd have a Lambo in the garage.  So freakin' obnoxious.

I agree with you about Ferraris- there are some I like, but overall, I wouldn't consider myself a Ferrari perosn.

Its obviously a chop of a Cayman, but it still looks very good nonetheless.

This is supposed to be the "baby" ferrari, priced underneath an upgraded F430,  around $150K US.  Winding Road had an article about it, and they said the F430 will get a new V10, 5 liters and around 550hp.

I see Cayman and Elise.
I look at the front and see pure evil.  And I like it.

I look at the back and I see a droopy ass.  And I don't like it. :(

Raghavan

I love the front end and the profile. Very Cayman. But the back end looks like ass.

Cayman + Elise + 599 + Ferrari badge = this

Prediction:  I will buy one in 2010.

That's right, I am a white Canadian who loves Lamborghini.  Ferrari's cars always come off as fairly pretentious in their design.  That pretentiousness doesn't stop there either.  Picking the buyers for their cars instead of it being first come first served has always bothered me.  The fact that they can build a 4000+ lbs GT car and everyone worships it, but the same people turn around a bash a Mustang or Viper for being too heavy.  The company, the cars, and usually the people that love them is what makes me dislike Ferrari so much.  But this car is so pretty, I can't help but love it.

Lamborghini isn't exactly known for reliability.  Lambo also doesn't have the racing heritage or success that Ferrari has had.  Ferrari really only builds street cars to fund their racing endeavors, and their racing development trickles down into their street cars.  I'm not aware that Lambo is really involved much in motorsport.  In fact, when Ferruccio Lamborghini was still running the company, they had a "no racing" policy.

Couple of things.

1. Lamborghini Countach, Diablo...not pretentious in design? The Countach is the automotive equivalent of a disco-era polyester suit...

2. I agree with the Scagletti being too big and heavy. It is the 2 door V12 Quattroporte. However, Ferarri for the most part definitely makes cars worthy of worship. The F430 and 599 GTB are definitely amongst the best cars in production today.

3. This is without a doubt a p-shopped Cayman with Ferarri badging. Photographic platform sharing, if you will. The color and rear buttress are dead giveaways. And I don't know how they can make this smaller than the F430 with the same motor and drivetrain layout (MR) while complying with increasingly stringent safety regs. Plus the F430 isn't that bad of a car. If anything, Ferarri should bring back the flat-12 Testarossa and keep the F430 as is.

Nope.  They are totally amd sompletely badass in design.  There's nothing about them that suggest the owner is a fake accent speaking, nose in the air, pretentious prick.  Everything about Ferrari designs do.

I never said they weren't, but it is a double standard that Ferrari fans have.

sandertheshark

Heavy Ferraris like the Scag and the 599 don't pretend to be the kind of track car the Viper is.  They're luxury GTs.  And when you're in the 600+hp club there's a little leniency with curb weight.

But I do agree that many Ferrari fans judge American cars unfairly, and most Ferrari owners are "self-indulgent weiners" as Nicolas Cage so eloquently put it.  But I don't think that stems from Ferrari's design so much as the general nature of people who can afford to drop a six figure sum on a pretty car.

No leniency was given the GT500 which is anything but a track car.
