Yes, I'm sure.  Technically, as stated before, the original series 911 ran until the 964, with constant changes, most notably being the introduction of the 930 and the 911SC, which is basically a 930 without a turbocharger.

Yeah, the 930 is to the 911 3.2, and the 911SC as to what the 997 Turbo is to the 997 today.

964 for me. But it's a very difficult call. I do love all of them.

Same here.  But I think the 964 is where the 911 really began to hit its stride.  It's the perfect mix of old school simplicity and modern technology.  I'm sure you could drive even a 964 today and it would feel very much like a modern car.

I have a sentimental attachment to that one also. My aunt dated a guy who had one when I was young. I got to ride around in it and it was the first car I was ever in going over 100 mph. And I love the whale tale.

That's pretty cool.  Did she marry the guy?  I bet he was great.  Porsche owners are always good people.

Thats a really tough choice. A 964 RS America? 993 Turbo? 996 GT3? 997 GT3?

This is certainly the most beautiful:

You're technically not the owner of the boxster right? You don't want to ruin that reputation for porsche owners

My favorites are:
'73 911 Carrera RS 2.7
930
993 GT2
964 RSA
993 RS
964 Turbo
993 Turbo S

I think I'd take the 993 GT2. Raw, no A/C, pure racing spec.

911 SC!

Brilliant car!  2nd gear is a bit weird, though.

I'll admit I was never a fan of the 911's looks.  They all closely resembled frogs.

Thus I have to pick the 911 that looks least like the traditional 911 design, the 996.  It was also the one that abandoned the old air cooled design, a move towards the future.   Now all we need is a next generation 911 to abandon the rear engined design for a mid-engined one.  Or possibly a front engined 928 successor could replace the 911 as well.  It irritates me that the 911 is as good as it is, despite a fundamentally flawed design.  It is a testament to Porsche engineer's amazing ability.  Thus I can't wait for the 911 to die out (which sadly may never happen) so Porsche could start with a clean sheet.  If the Cayman, Boxster, and CGT are indication of what Porsche can do with a mid engined design, then a midengined 911 replacement could be quite special.

All you 911 lovers are gonna hate me, so Flame away.

Raza

They tried replacing the 911 with the 928 already, and that was wildly successful.  The 928 made the 911 obsolete and is still sold to this day.

Waitaminnit!

If Porsche changes the 911, it will be the death of the brand.

THERE WAS NEVER A PRODUCTION 901!!!!!! IT WAS A PROTOTYPE FOR THE 1965 911!!

I used the list in the poll, I assumed it was correct (I can't say I know much about older Porsches).

Before I made the poll I read on the internets somewhere (wikipedia maybe) that 901 was the internal designation for the original car, along the same lines as 964, 996 etc.  This was due to the intention that the car original be called that, before Peugeot stopped Porsche using it.  So from Porsche's perspective, the 901 is a 911 as much as a 997 is a 911, arguably.

I know nothing about them, so I based this only on styling.

The 901 was what the 911 was originally going to be called. 901 was never actually used by Porsche.

I think the 901 designation was already being used by Peugout IIRC.

If it was used as an internal designation what would make it any different from 964, 996, or 997?

I don't understand the question.

TBR

If Porsche used the 901 name internally as a project number why is it wrong to use it if it is perfectly fine to use 964, 996, and 997?

JYODER240

The 911 was originally goign to be called the 901.

I would love a 964 Turbo, so my vote for 911 changes to 964.

Oh hell, they're all fantastic!

Because it was finally known as the 911, internally too. 901 was just a prototype, before the car ever truly came to be.
