Yes, DSG is still a better system in all aspects, IMO.? BUT, SMG has improved substantially over its three generations.? Those that dog on the system should actually take the time to use and learn it, THEN you can harp on it if you would like? :ohyeah:

I think we will see more and more DSG's in the near future. Borg-Warner's exclusive license to VAG is almost over, so other brands will be able to get their own versions pretty soon (without having to go to the expense of developing one of their own).

I hope so, I love the transmission.

Very well said SJ :ohyeah:

I think anybody that cant tell how much more direct the SMG feels and acts compared to a regular slush box needs his/her brain checked.  :praise:

Some people have never even driven the new M5/M6 with SMG III but pretend they know everything

Quote from: SJ_GTI on June 27, 2007, 11:11:18 AM
It depends on the automatic. In theory, yes you could probably program a regular slushbox to respond as quickly and "act" like an SMG. However, SMG has a few attributes that I like better than slushboxes (ie: automatics with torque converters). The main one is that an SMG still directly connects the engine with the transmission, where as the slushbox still has a fluid. SMG's tend to have better throttle response for this reason.

With all due respect most Ferrari F430's at max travel back and forth to country clubs or high fi functions/dinners with some rich old guy behind the wheel much like M5's or M6's do. Majority of the owners of Ferrari F430's dont track their cars on daily basis so the arguement that F-1/SMG style suit the nature of F430's better then M6's or M5's makes little sense to me.

The M6 and M5 are very capable hyper GT and sports sedans in there own right much like F430 is a great exotic. ;)

I have no problem with SMGs (or F1 or whatever you want to call them) on cars like, say, the Ferrari F430.? But on more "luxury" oriented road cars (anything that will see much more time on city streets than on a track), such as the M5 or M6 and definately the Quattroporte, a good slushie is a better transmission.?

It would seem weird to me for a 5-spd car to have anything other than this:
1 3 5
2 4 R

But, this makes sense for a 6-spd:
R 1 3 5
   2 4 6

I am not Raza, but I know some E30 M3s used the dog leg config, as well as the Miura (IIRC).

Many older Ferraris use doglegs, so did the E30 M3 Evo and the 190E 2.3-16; oh god, the Viggen doesn't have that pattern does it?  Has it been so long that I'd forget something like that?

Actually, I think

   1 3 5
R 2 4 6

Makes the most sense for a 6 speed.

As I recall, old BMW 5 speeds were

R 1 3 5
   2 4

weren't they?

The ones I drove valeting were, yes.

The shift pattern I had posted I saw in a 1987 Porsche 928.  One of the rare manuals.  This was my co-workers car that I think I have made mention of a while back.

Damn, that Mazda has a complicated transmission.

Actually, that's the shift pattern for a 10 speed out of a Freightliner.  The Mazda's a more straightforward

1 3 5
2 4 R

How does that trans work?

Mechanically, think of it as a 5 speed gearbox with a secondary, 2-speed gearbox bolted to the output shaft, providing 10 unique ratios in all.  5 ratios in low range and 5 ratios in high range.  You set the secondary 2-speed in low range and you run through gears 1-5 as you would with a 5 speed.  Then you switch the 2-speed into high range (pull on a switch on the shifter on most newer rigs) and bring the shifter back to the first gear position and you're in 6th (or 1-hi).  2nd gear in high range becomes 7th, 3rd is 8th, and so on.  Same idea as a 10 speed bicycle that has 2 different front sprockets and 5 rear, really.
