BMW May Unveil New X5 in 2006
Date Posted 06-22-2005

MUNICH, Germany ? BMW appears to be preparing to introduce an overhauled version of its X5 sport-utility vehicle next year.

The company has reportedly been testing prototypes of the new vehicle in Germany. So far this year, the X5 has been BMW's third best-selling vehicle in the U.S. behind the 3 Series and 5 Series passenger cars. Earlier this month the 500,000th X5 rolled off the line at its Spartanburg, South Carolina, assembly plant ? just over five years since its introduction on the North American market.

In a recent phone interview with Inside Line regarding the new X5, a BMW spokesperson wouldn't confirm or deny reports that an overhauled model will arrive next year, but the spokesperson pointed out the customary life cycles of BMW's vehicles indicate next year would be the time for a new X5 to arrive.

BMW vehicles, the spokesperson said, typically run on seven-year life cycles. The current X5 was introduced in the latter part of 1999 as a 2000 model, so the arrival of a replacement in 2006 will likely fit the pattern.

What this means to you: BMW's X5 is one of the most popular SUVs on the market, so a new and improved model with significant upgrades in its features and amenities will make it even more tempting.
