Is the "glitter lady" personalized plate part of the package?

Of course. It's all in on this one, baby!

If he's gonna get a beater truck, it should actually be able to do truck stuff.

Huh? Are Rangers incapable of hauling mulch?

I'm considering replacing the G with something a bit more capacious - my wife's Merc can stay: it's her fun car.

If the only reason you want a bigger car is for the occasional load of mulch, I still say you're much better off just renting a truck from Home Depot a few times a year.

If you want a good reliable utility vehicle that looks a bit truckish, have a look at something like this...https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/inventorylisting/viewDetailsFilterViewInventoryListing.action?sourceContext=&formSourceTag=112&newSearchFromOverviewPage=true&inventorySearchWidgetType=AUTO&entitySelectingHelper.selectedEntity=c22920&entitySelectingHelper.selectedEntity2=&zip=30303&distance=50&searchChanged=true&modelChanged=false&filtersModified=true#listing=173474740

2012 was the last year before they went all 'import'.  I4 is not so good (Mazda engine) but the V6 is excellent.  Good bit of cargo room as well.  Nothing fancy, but good for a run to the garden centre; or cross country road trip.

That one is likely at 650 lbs. They're nice little reliable trucks, but there's no room inside of them and no hauling capacity to speak of. For that same 3500 bucks, he could get something that could actually truck.
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

Edmunds has payload at 1240lbs.

Also, I was just trying to make the point that a beater truck might be a better option than replacing his DD with a more compromised vehicle if he doesn't need the extra room very often.

And I got ya; but not that one.

But he doesn't want a beater anyways I don't think (and I'm very pro-beater)

Well, if we didn't ignore initial requirements and suggest wildly different option, this wouldn't be CarSpin.

Yup. The interiors on those are cheap cheap cheap, but they're excellent runarounds.

Wow, I can get a real Hmmvervee for $5k?

Morris Minor

So I just read the C&D first drive of the QX50 & also the CX-5. The QX is certainly follicularly-gifted in the plums department but it makes no sense - heavy and thirsty, with performance I'd only use when I'm not sitting at a stop light: sitting at stop lights is 99.7% of my time behind the wheel. A CX-5 has the same cargo volume, is nicely designed, and just as good for sitting in stationary traffic staring at a Camry's dented bumper, all this while burning less gas. If I could get it in that Jeep Rhino color it would go some way to offsetting its bald bollocks.

Hmm QX50 might do it - not going to fall apart.
Are you getting rid of the G? If you need something for hauling/errands a used minivan is cheap. An FX has a pretty shitty cargo hold. I am smitten by the looks though. Def on the list for the Rabbit replacement.

Yes and no.

The ones in good running condition are still pulling 8 to 10 grand. (Check out some youtubes to see what you're actually likely to get for 5 grand). Many of these are high mileage units, and I'm told to avoid anything that was ever up-armored (the extra weight is hell on them), or that has an open machine gun ring (it's been raining and snowing on the electronics).

But yeah, people have gotten them and had a really ball busting toy for not a lot of money, but it's something that comes with a few caveats.

They're just so large. I'd love to have one, but they wouldn't fit on a lot of the trails I run.

This is true. They make more sense out west. Occasionally you see the M-gators for sale, which are military prepped John Deere Gators, and they go pretty cheap.

Jeeps are manly but hopelessly unreliable.

Jeep's sketchy reliability extends to the entirety of the FCA family.
