"Does not stay on" = it starts but quits, way easier to figure out than a totally dead motor.

But I don't really get the appeal of Karmann Ghias at all.

Type 1 motors are still pretty cheap; and to be honest, a Karmann with a stock mill is a real slug.

Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

Air cooled VW aficionados consider the Ghias as very desirable. Rust free, non wrecked examples are rare. The parts that make the car run are standard VW parts, not expensive. I've restored 3 Beetles and made money on all of them, plus I still have an engine stand and a box of parts.

Could also mean "turns over but doesn't catch", meaning it doesn't run at all.

If its an empty shell with a straight and solid body, its still a bargain.

A nicely designed and semi-hand built body with super reliable mechanicals.  Slow by today's standards, but the engine can be improved for minimal cost.  For me the only turnoff is the trademark air cooled VW flat 4 chirp.    I'd consider a convertible.

Apparently, looking at prices, a lot of people agree with that.

I went for it two months ago and so far I'm loving the classic car experience...but then again I'm known among my friends for being weird

Yeah, tractor engines are cool I guess.
But it really needs to be rebuilt so it can make power over 3000 RPM. Then EFI. turbo, etc. Might as well put in a 2JZ, no shit.

I adore classic cars but I am no mechanic and I would hate to spend time finding and sourcing spare parts etc.

For me a nice "Youngtimer" (a car that's old but not too old) would be ideal. If I could I'd want a Mercedes-Benz S123 T-Modell, preferably a 230TE with a 4-speed Automatic.

Is that a Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth?

That front looks very Dodge Aspenish and Plymouth Volareish.

Saw a beautiful little '62 Falcon Futura at the Auto Swap recently. Two door, 6 banger, auto trans, all OEM. OE dashpad and headliner. Looked like the type of car that daddy bought, sunk a shitload of cash in, and gave it to the daughter. Except it has manual steering, no A/C, and nowhere to plug in an Ipod in the radio (which was also OE).
$4500 asking- worth more, had a cracked exhaust manifold. Rust free CA car with black and yellow plates. Looked like this:

I'm kicking myself for not buying it.

Been checking the local Craigslist for a good project. Also started checking out other Craigslists in other states. It seems that if you're looking for a vintage pickup., the ones in Utah are the best condition and price. Do they salt the roads in Utah? There was some debate about it among my coworkers. How about Idaho, salt?
This would be a $5K truck here:

Not too much salt used in the valleys - at least not compared to New England.

There's usually no salt, but some private parking lots or whatever may have salt. The mountains usually have sand instead.

Vegas/AZ is another great place to find clean old cars. The Trooper I picked up in Vegas had zero rust (which is a miracle).

And two years later, Lee Iacocca adds a long hood, short trunk, a "sporty" marketing push and the Mustang is born!
