Best regular drivers' ///M Car?

E30 M3 (The original and race winningest)
E36 M3 (A handling legend according to C&D)
E46 M3 (The street cred favourite)
E90/92 M3 (V8 high revving goodness)
F80/82 M3/4 (Turbo super fast)
E82 1M (The little rascal)
F87 M2 (And a more mature v2)
E39 M5 (Who doesn't love it)
E60 M5/6 (Because high revving V10 in sedan)

Explain.

I only included "regular" editions. So no CSL, GTS, EVO, etc editions. Just the "run of the mill" M cars. I also pre-selected the only ones that I think are contenders. I may have missed your favourite.

The M3s are ordered the way they came out from older to newer. 1M and M2 are single versions. E39 M5 is the V8 one from 97-2001ish and E60 is the bangle one.

E90 M3 easy (E90 is the 4 door right?).

Its comfortable, has that deep V8 rumble, still looks great, but not as cumbersome and the 5 series cars.

This is tough, but I think I'd have to go for the E46 M3.

I actually think I dig the E60 M5 more than even the E39. I love the E39 M5, but I feel like the E90 M3 was everything the E39 M5 was, only better.

E85 Z4 M is also a good choice

On a somewhat related note, I waste a shitload of time browsing EAG BMW's inventory. If I ever have "fuck you" money, I'll buy an E46 M3 from there.

I voted M2 because it's the best looking one IMO. Probably would have voted for the clown shoe if it was a choice.

E46 M3 is the best BMW from when BMW was at its best. Z4M coupe is my favorite though.

I think few single cars are a better all-rounder than an E90 M3. I loved mine for the 50K miles I had it. It was flawless and saw a ton of track days. Only ding on it is the interior quality. It is not good, especially compared to the preceding E46.

I forgot to add the Z3M and the Z4M. The Z4M especially is a fantastic driver's car. Back when BMW took the fight to Porsche in that segment.

The E46 is definitely an emotional favorite. Now that we live in Leon I am getting to enjoy the cars again daily. Because anywhere I go means at least a 10 mile drive at least and with very little traffic. I find myself reaching for the keys of the E46 more often than not.

I agree on E60 vs E39. But it's not a popular opinion among bimmerheads where the E39 is revered. The E60 still feels like a completely modern car. The E39 feels old. In this case the E60 interior is much better. It is also, when pushed, rawer than the E39. The V10 is an absolute beast.

EAG comes up often in our club chat. Their cars are fantastic, the best BMWs around. But very pricey.

E30 is lovely. I have only driven it once about 6 years ago when I got the 1M and went to drive on dome mountain roads with a friend who has one. We swapped cars. I probably didn't get enough time with it to bond. It was nice but it felt really slow.

The M2 is great looking. I like the M4 best of the current ones however. Forgot the clown shoe. The Z4M was much better than the clown shoe to drive however.

I'm keeping the E46. I'd love to add a Z4M roadster to the collection. Over time I think it would be fun to get one M of every series. I've got 1,3 & 5. Missing 2,4,6. An M2 manual, an M4 CS and an M6 comp pack would do nicely. And a Z4M roadster. But not happing anytime soon. Maybe the Z4M roadster.Those seem to have bottomed out in price and are starting to climb.

I'd also like to do an overhaul of the E46. I have a wish list over at ECS tuning with a ton of parts.

Z4M for me would be an easy choice. The rest of these...probably the E46. It's the 964 of the M3.

I'd probably add some power to the E30. Either mod the original motor or swap in a newer one.

The E36 is the generation I like the least. Especially when considering the castrated version you got in the U.S.

E39 M5. Not having driven most of these I can't say which is the best drivers car, and I've always loved the styling of the e39. Good size/packaging too.

What makes you say that? The E46 and the 964 are both the final iteration of the original line. Other than still being air cooled, the 993 looked radically different from the original 911, whereas the 964 was still incredibly similar.

There is no "original line" per se on the M3 as with the 911. Each gen of M3 is very different from the predecessor.

Every month or so I'll look up what they go for.  A low mileage 4dr with the 6spd can be had for 35K.  Not a bad price for that V8.

E39 M5, mostly because it represents the pinnacle of BMW design (together with the E38 7-series) imo.
While I haven't driven the M5, I have driven the E39 Alpina B10 pretty extensively, and that really is a fantastic everyday driving car.

My former E90 sold recently (my friend who had it sold it) for $18K or so. But it had 55K miles. It was in great shape.

You wouldn't regret it. The only big issue with that car is that the rod bearings can get spun in some cars above 80K miles. There are kits to prevent that. It also drinks fuel. But that's the price of driving a fine NA V8 that is never coming back.

I think the most "related" ones were E36 and E46. They shared an engine and the overall suspension architecture. Also similar interior layouts.

E30 was a 4 pot, much lighter and with simpler suspension. And of course E90 became a V8 and quite heavier.
