GTO vs. GT500

I was at a light this morning when a GT500 convertible pulled up alongside me and wanted to race.  I would have loved the race- but I was in a right turn only lane and had to get to work.    :cry:  It would have been fun- and I wondered all morning who would have wno that one.

Unless he started the race with the keys out of the ignition he probably would have won. Remember he has 500 big ol' horsepower.

As much as I dig the GTO, the GT500 would win hands down.  I also like it better.

But remember- I've got about 445-450 - and my car stock hit 0-60 in about 4..6 or so and his is a heavier convertible.? Even if he beat my car- it would still have been a fun race and I hope to see him again.

I didn't know your car was modded. He would still have the edge I think but with a good launch you might have been able to take him.

Lightly modded- flash pack tuner chip- different exhaust- and a couple other minor changes to the air flow.  Nothing major but man I wish I'lda had time for that one!  Even to lose would have made a great story!

The GT500 may be faster, but if I was buying I'd take this

'05 Ford Escape XLT V6

His is a porker and I think you'd put the down power more effectively.

Wait, you have a Mustang GT500?

I'm sorry to say this Rohan, but unless you have that dyno proven I find it hard to believe.? Exhaust is worth 5-8hp at if it's a catback, a full cold air induction kit would be worth maybe 8-10hp and and an ECU flash is 10hp max without other modifications.? If I was being optimistic, I would say you have 430hp at the flywheel.? Realistically, it's probably more like 422-425hp at the flywheel.

Having said that, if you have hit 60 mph in 4.6 seconds you would have taken a stock GT500 Vert without a problem because the GT500 vert hits 60 mph in 4.9 seconds.

Personally, i would take the GTO. It would of been a close race with some glorious sounds. I'll take the GTO. The gt500 is a porker

Every car responds to mods differently. Some cars see larger gains than others but I agree that 450 sounds very high.

Also that GT500 vert hit 4.9 to 60 with that driver, with that car, on that track, on that day, with those conditions. It could run higher or lower when those factors change.

I'd have to imagine it wouldn't get any faster being driven by some schmoe at a stop light, but that remains to be seen.

That's what you want to take against a GT500.  The Monaro VXR500.

" Vauxhall claims the VXR 500 will hit 60mph in 4.9sec and breach 185mph. To say it feels every bit as fast as the claims is an understatement. Even Harry ?I drive a Zonda everyday? Metcalfe reckoned it felt ?f*****g rapid?."

No naturally aspirated V8 gains 50 hp from a catback, ECU flash, and "some intake work".? My brother-in-law modifies LS and LT engines and we've discussed it.

It would run neck'n neck with the vert, but the coupe would waste it.

Vauxhall claims 4.9 seconds to 60, but the LS2 model would hit 60 quicker than that.  It's a very conservative estimate, assuming the traction is there.

A coupe GT500 hits 60 mph in 4.5.?  MM&FF ran the 1/4 mile in 12.24 with a stock GT500.? No stock Monaro does that.

Rohan, if you keep that car you need to introduce it to a Magnacharger...150 more horsepower wouldn't hurt. :devil:

So you're saying it's impossible for a car of equal power and less weight to be as fast?

Pontiac quoted the LS2 GTO at 4.6, if I remember correctly.  Might have been 4.8.  This has 100 more horsey power.  Obviously, though, since it's not a Mustang, it can't be as fast?

I have never seen numbers for a Monaro in the low 12s for the 1/4 mile.  Show me the numbers and I'll believe it.

GT500 = 3920 lbs
GTO = 3725

The GTO ain't exactly a lightweight.

I haven't seen numbers for the VXR500 either.

But you assume, even though the cars are of similar power and similar weight (I do believe the VXR500 is lighter), that the Monaro can not be as fast as the GT500.  Why?

Nope.  I fully believe it's capable, but until I see numbers I'm skeptical.  People predicted low 4s for the GT500 before it came out because other cars with similar weight and power do 0-60 in 4.2 or so.  The GT500 didn't meet expectations.

Well, the GT500 has 10% of the weight at the back, so I can see why traction problems arose.

:lol:

It's funny because the car is severely undertired for acceleration runs, however it is nearly impossible to spin the car with the tires it's got.
