Junkyard 4.6L modular with a Thunderbird floating rear end. Do it.
The 4.6L doesn't fit.  It's too tall.

Did you get your hours back at your job or what?
Not yet.  This 3 day week thing won't last forever.  My wife is also in the final stages of interviewing for a good job.  If the gets the job and if I stayed at 3 days a week, we'll be making roughly $15K a year more then I made on my own.  If she gets the job, and when I get my full time hours back, we'll be boosting the stock 1.6L.

2002tis only had 114 hp or so.  I think the tiis had maybe 130 hp, and the turbos had 150 or so.

When did you need to start having gobs or power to have fun?

The woodruff key can be put in the wrong way if I recall. And it's hard to tell what's right after you take one apart unless you know WTF it looks like. So I think the problem had more to do with motors going boom after their first timing belt change then a defect in the motor itself. The 1.8 made it so that it was impossible to build it wrong. Just get someone who knows about the MX-5 to work on it and you should be fine. My 1.6 has almost 200K on it and not a problem or rebuild so far.

I need to knock on some wood really quick.

They fixed the problem in the middle of 1991. I think they just used a bigger key.

I say leave it stock. IIRC the magazines liked the balance of the original Miata and complained as the car "grew". They said the bigger wheels and horsepower bumps took the fun out of the car. Just my .02!

Yeah, but he has the automatic transmission. I would make it a monster Miata and mod the trans, if that's the car I had.

105 hp is fun?
With a 5 speed it's a blast. You feel like you're going 100+ driving down a back road when you're going 45-50 and not going to jail or getting someone killed. Rather than having some powerful car that when you're going over 100 you still feel like you're doing just doing 50 or so. That's the point of the car that most power people just don't get.

An auto however will probably need that turbo.

SVT666

Curb weight on the 1990 is 2100 lbs.  The automatic only gets 26 mpg on the highway.  That blows.  My SVT gets better then that.  Oh well, once I boost it, it's going to be worse.

How much RPM is it turning on the highway?

The S2000 is rated at 26 mpg highway, and I averaged exactly that on a handful of full tanks on that car (a nice bonus for cruising back roads at 55 mph)

Congratulations on the car, Craig.  Enjoy...:ohyeah:

We're waiting to see if my wife gets the job she's interviewing for.  If she gets it, then we'll be shipping it out by train.  I would fly and drive it, but that would take 5 days of 12 hour stints.

Shipping is $1078.

$1078 is not too bad.

Why would I want to keep pouring more oil into the engine and get super shitty mileage, when I could just boost it for a lot less money?

But the price we agreed to on the car is $3000 less then the cheapest one I could find out here with the same mileage.

Is the market in Canada really that strong on NA Miatas?  I've found some with higher mileage that I've tried to get my dad to buy over the last year or so for as little as $2,000 in good condition.

Higher mileage ones go for about $6000 here.  You have to remember that we have a population about 1/10 the size of yours, so there is much less selection on the used market for every car.  There are only five 1990 Miatas for sale in my entire province and we have a population of 4.5 million people.  Miatas that haven't been driven in the snow are also very hard to find, so when you do find one, it's usually more expensive.
