"The Yugo GV is a remarkably equipped hatchback that gives new meaning to the term 'basic transportation'. Let's take a look at why.

As you can see, the access to the engine compartment is via remote hood release on the left fender well. This is very important to the customer because the location provides protection from theft and tampering."

I love how that's the first thing they mention. And then only AFTER that do they mention, you know, the engine and stuff...

I didn't realize Yugos had a transverse leaf spring in the back.

In this month's C&D, they have a small interview with Malcolm Bricklin.  I don't think he was the cause of the downfall of this car at all.
2. 1995 Saturn SL2 5-speed, 126,500 miles. 5,000 miles in two and a half months. That works out to 24,000 miles per year if I can keep up the pace.

Bricklin? Bricklin wasn't the downfall of this car, the CAR was. It's just not a good product. There was a reason it was the cheapest car on the market. It was the punchline to jokes, like Ladas in Canada.

Now, if you want a car that was let down not only by spotty reliability but complete and utter mismanagement...

I think mine is 19.0.  I could be wrong, but a 0-60 of 12.4 isn't giving me much promise in this department.

Did you know that the Yugo has a curb weight of 1819 - 2028 lbs, and the Swift is right at 1800? Swift also has at least a 10 hp advantage over the top-of-the-line GVX model.
I'd beat a Yugo in a bench race anytime, anywhere.

I'm going to say it's the same reason any new car is bought over a nicer new one at the same price: you get to be the first owner and you get a warranty.

Because underneath it's an old Fiat 128? From what I hear, Abarth parts fit on it easily.

Yes, I'm sure so many Yugo buyers purchased them with the intent of importing Fiat performance parts (Fiat was no longer sold in the US at that point) to install onto it...

Onslaught

Our dealership sold Yugo's for just a few months. They couldn't keep them running and the boos said fuck it and stopped selling them. It was before my time but I was told they are the biggest POS on the road at the time by the guys at the shop who worked on them.

Fiat 127, actually.

Years ago, when I needed an alternator for my old Fiat X-1/9, I was pleased to discover that one from from a Yugo was identical!  That saved me a bit of cash.

60-0 in 168 feet?  The 1991 940 with the 'small' brakes does that in 112 feet.  The 1993+ have bigger brakes and stop in less distance than that.
