Smoked it?  It shouldn't have unless the Mustang had a piss poor driver.  They have identical acceleration numbers.

was there a big difference between the auto and manual acceleration? I don't remember which cars had which transmission (I was 7), but I just remember that the Camaro peeled out more. It got a jump on the Mustang and pretty much just stayed ahead.

I know they weren't produced at the same time, but...

I can already hear the anime music and see the motion blur in the background as they prepare to do "battle"

I'm going to go with an on-screen rivalry; that from the best car chase scene of all time.

1968 Ford Mustang Fastback GT390 vs. 1968 Dodge Charger Magnum 440:

Eye of the Tiger

That was far from the best car chase scene of all time. Any episode of The Dukes of Hazzard has a better chase scene.

I finally watched it a few years ago and wasn't vert impressed. I was kind of let down with all the talk over the years.
It didn't suck but it's noting so grand and I no longer see why people talk about it so much.

Laconian

They are both from the same era and cost around the same money, but I'd say the 300ZX TT is more of a direct competitor.
Kia EV6 GT-Line / MX-5 RF 6MT

Onslaught

I'd say all three went at each other. And I really like all of them.

But I LOVE the RX-7.

Minpin

When I lived in Memphis our next door neighbor had two RX-7s. This was back in like 95-96 or so. I was too young to realize the badassness of that. They were kept under cover at all times.

Onslaught

I don't think the S2000 and MX-5 are direct competitors. More like the MR-2 Spyder VS MX-5 or Skystice vs MX-5.

Not an NB and a 1st gen S2000? They're both RWD roadsters.....

But the cost was very different. An S2000 was closer to the Z3 price range.
The MR-2 and MX-5 cost the same and had similar performance.

It ranks pretty high, but only because the chase was so raw with driving mistakes by both the hero and the villain.  Steve McQueen hits a couple parked cars and even misses a turn altogether, and has to back up.  He genuinely missed that corner during shooting and they decided to leave it in.  Beyond that, I agree, it's not that impressive.  Ronin was far more impressive.  Discounting the jump, the chase in Gone in 60 Seconds (the remake) was really good.  The chase scene in the first Gone in 60 Seconds was also much better (and almost 40 minutes long).

the Teuton

There are people out there who believe the MX-5 to be the better handler of the two. An NB MazdaSpeed Miata versus an S2000 on a short track might be close. The S2000 CR would probably wipe the floor with it, though.
2. 1995 Saturn SL2 5-speed, 126,500 miles. 5,000 miles in two and a half months. That works out to 24,000 miles per year if I can keep up the pace.

I thought its significance was that it was pretty much the first car chase scene in a major motion picture, and that noone has ever seen anything like it before. It seemed to establish the formula for the classic car chase scene.

Vinsanity

here's a rivalry that gets the blood boiling

MrH

If you've ever driven an NB miata and S2000, you'll quickly see they're two different leagues.  The miata is a great car, I'll be the first to admit it, but the S2000 is just much faster in the straight line.

I like both.
