So I talked to the guy at the body shop today. The estimate is $5700--about half labor half parts, so that's a solid amount less than I thought it could be.

One thing I noticed was they put my car in the system as an s-line, so I'm thinking there might be a chance I get an S-line bumper?! If I do, I'm definitely s-lining the rest of the car. I was considering calling back and having them s-line the entire car anyways and tell the 'rents that's how much it cost.

But that's a little too dishonest.

Colonel Cadillac

Really thinking about seeing if I can s-line the rest of my car. This could be epic. Increase the estimate by $1500...still seems like a reasonable estimate  :winkguy:

The rear s-line treatment could be 'spensive.

Are you parents going to want to see the bill with all the parts listed, though?

Did the take it apart and do an estimate or was this just looking over it as is? Because if they didn't take it apart then it could be more after they start getting into it.

Yeah, that took it apart for the complete estimate.

Go used or even better OEM parts. One bad thing about insurance is they'd put after market  everything on your car so they can save $100 and mess your car up. "You're in good hands" is bull shit.

Just out of curiosity, what's the best insurance company from your end of the business?  If I needed bodywork on my car, I'd fight hard for OEM parts.  My dad had bodywork done on a car once with non-OEM stuff (per the insurance company, I assume, and this was years ago), and the replaced panels were rusted terribly in a few years, while the rest of the car was fine.

Nevertheless, an obscenely douche-tastic move. Had you actually gone through with it, yes, that would have been even worse.

From the sounds of it, you gave it some serious thought too--to the point of having the body shop (I'm assuming) price it all out for you.

So let's review:

You crash an expensive car your parents bought you. You show us an email you sent them, groveling and apologizing profusely and reassuring them how much you appreciate everything they've done for you.

In an act of kindness, they agree to pay for said damage out of their own pocket.

Turning an about face, you start entertaining thoughts of how you might be able to manipulate the situation for your personal gain, if the price is right and you can siphon away some more money without them noticing.

Two guys call you out.

You get all uppity and call one of them an asshole.

I can't really tell you who's the best. I think it kind of depends on the area and the people you're dealing with. I will tell you that in Charlotte the ones that seem to work with you are

State Farm, Geico and Progressive. Some of the other small ones are good too.

Nationwide isn't very good at all. And the king of ass hole is Allstate. Allstate can die and everyone who works for them too. They are the biggest A-Holes in the business.

Now if you smash up your own car then regardless of the insurance people they will put some after market stuff on it depending on the age. But Allstate and Nationwide are the worse at this and will do it to a brand new car.

Years ago they didn't have really any. Hell, you couldn't even get one for a Mazda MX-5, FD RX-7 or Millenia back in the 90's. But now it's becoming more and more regular regardless of how nice a car it is. I've had to try and make that shit fit many a BMW and other German car these last few years. And then you still have the remanufactured shit I talked about before. You can get that for almost any car. If you ever have a crash then you'd better look at what they figure to fix the thing. Don't think they won't put crap on a nice car.

And you always have used stuff too. Now a used finder is ok if it was OEM to begin with. But a used quarter on some on these cars is almost impossible to use. The reason is they weld them of course but now use special glues too. So when they send you the back half of a car from the junk yard you have to get that old one off without fucking it up. It takes a long time and most bodymen fuck it all to hell. Then your used quarter is going to be made out of filler before it's all said and done.

I also think about doing a lot of other stuff, like purchasing a Bronco. I really want one. Get a grip.

And no, I did not call the body shop to price it. Upon waking up, I believed it was a bad idea. Things are more exciting while under the influence of alcohol.
