Let it be noted that I generally do not park in handicapped spots. I only do it when the parking lot is absolutely packed and there are a solid number of handicapped spots just sitting pretty.

They have that shit at IKEA. I think the failure at hand here is the fact that there are so few of these people (as a percent of all customers) that it's absurd to designate parking spaces to them. That's like having parking spots for those who had too big a lunch.

I have no problem with the spots at IKEA or at your supermarket, because they aren't mandated by the government. The owner was not forced to have those spots, and if he wants to have those spots and feels they are beneficial, then he should have every right to have them.

I've seen a couple of "Mother and Child" parking spaces around here.  I've always wanted to bring my mother with me just so I can park in one of those.  Never mind that I'm 44 and my mother is 71.  I'll still assert our right to use it, dammit!

Well ain't you a bag of dicks.

1. The consequence if you can't find a nearby parking spot is that you have to walk a little farther. The consequence if a disabled person can't find a nearby spot, or two spots/a handicapped spot if they have a wheelchair to get in and out, may be that they can't go to the store or wherever you are.

2. Many disabilities are legitimate and invisible, so "gee they look fine" is invalid.

3. Even obese people might have a disability that's not related to their weight, and they may even be fat because of some disability, so "gee they're just a fatty and need the exercise" is invalid. And that's not even discussing that morbid obesity can be basically a mental disorder.

Your "invalid" points are invalid. The handicap spot thing is gamed a lot like any other government handout.

Few expectant mothers? It's a furniture store. They sell nursery furniture too. Unless you're living in a fairly small town, there are pregnant people everywhere.

When my wife was pregnant ( late stages ), she never used the spots. However, she couldn't count how many times she'd see some jackhole parking in either a handicap spot or an emergency lane for no good reason other to save themselves from walking an additional 30 feet.

How lazy has everyone become?
