Makes up for a lack of torque with short gearing.  It's also got fairly wide tires, low weight, a limited slip, and a pretty low polar moment of inertia.  I could see that car snapping around on you in the snow.

Short gearing. light weight, RWD

I can't even get out of my driveway when we have a snow here in either of my cars because of the things I listed above. Well, the Miata hasn't really got short gearing.
Fortunately I don't get much snow and even if I did I won't take one of my cars out in it. They salt the roads during that shit.

 aren't you under thirty? There's still time to redeem yourself. Sell both cars, get a 1M.

The miata was great in the snow this year. Short wheelbase, LSD, snow tires, and really short gearing makes for fun doriftos!

Did you ever put the top down while doing snow doriftos?

That's the one reason I wish I had a cloth top, or even better, a PRHT. I just want to be able to put on a jacket and throw the top down on a really cold night and go drive.

I have. Not supposed to drop the top when it's that cold though. It's not half as enjoyable as it sounds. Especially in cold Ohio.

No but for real my friend's S2000 is a handful in the snow so I know how it is. Still though, I wonder how these things would handle on snow tires. Or is that blasphemy....

  I did great in the miata in snow.  If I was just driving around, I kept stability control on, but when I felt like having fun, I turned it off and could drift comfortably wherever I went.

I'd wager you were on significantly narrower tires than the RX.  My 240SX with 195 width all-seasons actually did pretty well in all but the worst weather.  Narrow tires helped it bite through the snow.

Also has a considerably less aggressive suspension tune... AP1s have needlessly stiff setups

Why aren't you supposed to put the top down when it's cold?  I used to drive with the top down in below freezing temperatures all the time.

I don't know about hard tops or cloth, but vinyl gets brittle when cold, and is apt to crack.

I think you're not supposed to lower a power hard top if it's cold. Bad for them or something.

68_427

Some materials shrink when it gets cold, and lowering the top could rip/tear it.

I think that's why you don't put down a PHT too. It's made out of different metals and plastics and they all shrink and expand different. So if it's cold then stuff can go wrong. Or I think that's why anyway.

Cookie Monster

I'm pretty sure temperature doesn't matter for the PRHT. They just have to be clear of any ice that could jam the motors.

If it's less than 50 degrees out I have to actually get out of the car and push the window down and try to squish all the vinyl in to get it to latch down since it gets pretty stiff. Above about 60 degrees I don't have to get out of the car because the top is soft enough to latch down by itself.

The hydraulics probably get really viscous, which in turn strains the pump, lines, and fittings.  There's lots of plastic parts that get brittle and can break when cold.  That's probably the majority of it.

A little bit of snow is fun to drive in.  When it's above the front splitter and you need to get somewhere, it's a bit less fun.
