335is is probably the most prominent under performer.

The ZR1 destroyed the GT-R.  That was highly unexpected.  The Boss 302 is a monster of a car for $42,000.

Didn?t the ZR1 beat the GT-R on the ring as well? Can?t remember.

Also, this is the Laguna Seca Boss, I think it has some performance upgrades over the regular Boss but not sure what exactly.

Well even the Z06 ran a 2:53.5.  I'd like to see a base Z06 with performance pack and sticky runner.  Could potentially beat the ZR1's time.

Not enough to make a huge difference.  The Laguna Seca has R compound rubber, slightly different aero, no back seat, and some brake cooling ducts that the Boss 302 doesn't have.

S204STi

R compounds alone probably make a big difference.

Compound rubber as in semi slick tires? That makes a huge difference on a 3 minute lap. More than a second per minute easily.

No doubt, but it's not like 10 seconds faster.  The regular GT does it in 3:08.6 so the Boss 302 probably splits the two at 3:05 or so.

Thanks for posting this. Interesting stuff. Didn't think the ZR1 would be faster than the GTR. Id like to read the article and see which ones were the most fun. It'll be cool to see what a BRZ or FRS with summer rubber will do

Did they ever run a MkVI GTI?

3:25.1 GTI tested on 11/06
3:21.8 R32 tested on 11/08
3:19.3 GTI tested on 2/10

I am not sure which one of those two is the MkVI.

I sort of agree, though an Audi S5 (V8) did a 3:14.6 and its the most direct competitor to the 335is so not that bad.

If I were a ZR-1 owner, and my super hi-po near-racing sports car didn't have at least a slight edge over Nissan's grand tourer that cost $20,000 to $30,000 less, I imagine I'd be disappointed. As it is the GT-R runs a fairly respectable time.

Depending on price, that could be a good deal.

There are a lot of sports cars costing a lot more than $20k-$30k more than the GT-R that wouldn't have any edge over it, and I wouldnt be disappointed to own any of them.

Be that as it may, the ZR-1 is a focused sports car meant for outright speed and not much else. It's a no-frills, take-all-comers, balls-to-the-walls thrill machine. It is ALL about speed with that car, so yes, if it gets embarrassed by the cheaper Nissan, it is a shame.

The GT-R embarrasses many, as a matter of fact most more expensive cars. Exotic and not. The ZR-1 is a rare exception and the better for it. GT-R is also balls to the wall. The rear seats are a joke.

Tt-rs and the Cayman r are way over performers for their HP/weight ratio

Agreed.  The GT-R is as focused on speed and balls to the wall as anything on the market.

The ZR1 is as comfortable and easy to live with as any Corvette.

I think its pretty telling and sort of sad that about 90% of the cars tested can have their lap times predicted within a couple seconds by their HP/weight ratio... VIR is clearly a HP track first and foremost

Thats what the ZR1 owners say on the Vette forums. The majority of those guys use them as DD. They also say the ZR1 is easier to live with on a daily basis than the Z06!

No. There is no shame in losing to a GT-R.
