HIDs!! :rage:

HIDs should be illegal. I hate them with a passion.
I will never buy a car without them again.  The HIDs on my Focus are amazing.

My dad says the same thing. I don't like a lot of them (I'm talking about stock OEM ones) either. I find Nissan/Infiniti ones to be the worst for whatever reason.

At night particularly on local roads where there are no or few street lamps but also on poorly lit highways and parkways, I find keeping my fog lights on is very helpful.  Particularly if the area is heavily wooded or there are a lot of parked cars on the shoulder, it's much easier to see darting deer or pedestrians.

I find that most other vehicles even if they have fog lights don't keep them on though.  I always wonder why not?  Even if the road is relatively well lit, is there any downside?  Are there any circumstances where its illegal to keep them on?

Don't know about Greg/Catman, another Nissan Maxima owner and enthusiast, but I always left mine on at night without any apparent concerns from other drivers. Otherwise, I would not have. Some cars with add on or aftermarket type fog lights have an obnoxious blinding brightness to them. I never found this to be the case with any of my Maxima's with std integrated or freestanding fog lamps (depending on year, trim level, generation of Maxi). Greg? You?

My 2013 Volvo XC60 will have rear fog lights with an on/off switch. I am wondering about wether to leave these on. Anyone familiar with rear fog lamps?

AltinD

^^ Why would you live them on? They are for making the car visible in thick fog, and are indeed very blinding to the drivers behind you in regular weather.

Sometimes I think I'd like to put some ultra-powerful lights inside my rear window (facing backwards) so the next time some jackass with headlights brighter than the sun itself pulls up behind me, I can hit a switch and give them a taste of their own medicine!  :rage:

Most of the time fog lights are not a problem provided that they are aimed properly (low).

Growing up in the foggiest region of the planet (Newfoundland), we understood that fog lights were amber, and driving lights were clear. Many cars back there have ambers retrofitted, and are known to be the best to cut through foggy conditions. Clear lights only create a big wall of light in front of you.

Many of the law restricting auxiliary lights were due to driving lights not fog lights but fog lights got caught in the mix.

Maine-dude knows wassup.

Maine is foggy pretty much all spring. Souf Carolina is foggy pretty much all winter. Nevertheless, I have only found aux fog lamps to be a help if the normal low beams are bad.

Not amber, selective yellow. The reason people think it's better is that it's easier on the eyes than white light. There's nothing about the color of the light that makes it "cut though" fog better.

I found a selective yellow paint, which I applied to the fogs on the 944. I like it.

And the yellow lamps thing is French. Until the '80s or '90s, French cars had to have selective yellow headlights.

Oops. That's a no, eh? I failed to mentioned the extremely twisty, dark and dusty dirt roads I will definitely avoid with the new car. The rear fog lamps on the XC60? I was told NO by CJ... I am learning the rules of the road outside of my rural back roads dodging deer and an occasional hay wagon... Living on the lake, it gets mighty lonely on the roadways and early morning and nighttime fog...

CJ

In fog, heavy snow, or even heavy rain, they can be extremely beneficial. Any other time, and you're just blinding other drivers. Just needed to clarify!

You aren't blinding anyone, everyone just thinks you have a dead taillight.

They're pointed down.  Unless you're in a truck, you're not really blinding anyone.  Yeah, a truck with foglights on will blind the shit out of me, but you have to be in an even lower car to be blinded by mine.

I think he was talking about front, not rear.  But if he is talking about rear, it does look goofy (I think Minis have a central rear fog, which looks better), but I don't think it's appreciably brighter than LED brake lights.

If I'm not mistaken, XC60s have dual rear fogs.

I agree. The current generation Dodge Charger R/T and SRT-8 have near blinding rear exterior brake lights, IMO, especialy when reflecting off of wet paved roads. Not certain if the SXT Charger shares the LED backlighting of the brawnier models. The 2006-07 Honda Accord Sedans have decent LED brake lights. Just the right degree of brightness, I think.
