Camaro 1LE gets destroyed by BOSS 302

1LE is a terrible name. It makes me think that it's a four-cylinder, automatic only variant meant just for fleet use.

If they hadn't diminished the Z28 name, over the years, it would have made sense to use it as a Boss rival.

I agree, it doesn't tell me anything and just sounds like some random crap.  On the same topic ZL1 doesn't do anything for me either.  I know, I know, it means something for someone from like 40 years ago but it doesn't just sound badass like BOSS does.

1LE was the package code for factory-built road racing versions of the Camaro starting in the late 80s through to the late 90s.  These were the top-dogs of the 3rd and 4th generation Camaro.

Yeah, not sure why the Z28 name is so conspicuously absent. "SS", "ZL1" and "1LE" were far less known/used Camaro monikers. Now with the 1LE variant, doesn't seem like there is a place for a Z28.

280Z Turbo

They are saving it for an IROC-Z edition with droopy doors, velour interior, faded paint, and a 200 hp V8.

That's because it was never intended to be the name of a trim level.  It was an option code.

I hope they make a 1LE version of the next ATS based Camaro someday.  Would definitely consider buying it

Impressive.  Now, let's see them do something about the styling, sightlines, weight, and interior styling.

Exactly.

sportyaccordy

I dont know about you guys, but I don't recall anyone buying a car cause they liked its styling, outward visibility or low weight. Its all about those magazine comparos & performance figures.

Steering feel, handling, and visibility are meaningless.  All that matters are sales numbers and straight-line acceleration.  These are the only pertinent metrics of a performance car.  Hence why the V6 Camry is a superior performance car to half of what the people on this forum drive, and why the Camaro is a superior performance car to the Mustang.

Why do they even bother updating cars? So much hassle involved.

Pretty much. This talk about "steering feel" and "fun to drive" and other "enthusiast" language is the stuff people blindly regurgitate from auto mags in the never ending quest for automatic self-validating knowledge.

They also want to have cars that are "comparably equipped."

Whatever that happens to mean at the time.

I wouldn't say that it doesn't matter (people do think about these things, if not like we do, but in some way or another) but at the end of the day, if the car is unappealing visually, it won't sell.

Because although they like the way it looks, they don't want it to be a pile of bolts.

Eh, I figure they could keep making the current Camry for another 20 years or so before somebody complains.

I mean, kaizen is good and all, but here in America we relax and don't worry about it.  :mrcool:

Doesn't this invalidate your hard on for bench racing stats, Mr. "If the BRFZS does 15.0 in the quarter it sucks. But if it does 14.99999 color me interested"?

Which is funny, because their market is so much more image conscious than ours is. The popularity of the 3-series explains everything.

I know someone who races Stevenson Camaros in Continental series and sometimes Rolex series, and he said GM is saving the Z28 for something special.
