 That fuckin sound track....

As awesome as the 458 Speciale might end up being, it's hard to take that over the sound of a V12.

They used the word compromise a bit to much for what is Ferrari's flagship until the La Ferrari hits the stores.

I mean it is like a 3800lb 2 seat car

But it's got a 700 HP V12 and can be driven over long distances so it's all good.

Shelby GT500 was just 0.6 seconds slower and the Viper and Corvette annihilate it.  It's not that impressive to be honest.

0-60 is irrelevant. This thing is traction limited. It traps a good 4-5 MPH higher than either while not having that much more power. From a roll I am sure this would put all 3 of those cars in their respective places.

Who gives a shit though. Did you watch the video on mute???

I wasn't talking about 0-60.  I was talking about the lap time it set around Laguna Seca.  It barely outlapped the GT500 by just 0.6 seconds.  A Mustang.  The Corvette and Viper absolutely annihilate it around the track by 5 seconds a lap.

As for the noise, it was nice, but the Ferrari V8 sounds better.

MX793

I quite liked the piece on the early 90s 240SX that was linked at the end of the video.  Brought back fond memories.

The Ferrari bit was good too.

Were all cars being piloted by the same driver?  Were they all wearing comparable tires?

In the hands of Ferrari's test drivers, this thing laps whole seconds faster around Ferrari's Fiorano test circuit than the 599 GTO, the Enzo, the 458, and the 430 Scuderia.

Same driver and same track.  Comparable tires is a bullshit excuse when they run the cars with the tires they come with from the factory.

I didn't know whose times you were quoting.

Bear in mind the F12 is a touring car (a mind-numbingly powerful one), not a full blown sports/race car like the Viper or even Corvette.  The suspension is softer, the handling not as crisp, and it's more comfortable.  Leagues more comfortable than the Viper, I'll wager.  Likely much more comfortable than a Z06 or ZR1 Vette as well.

I mean, this thing has like 50 more HP and weighs like 700lbs more. Not sure what you were expecting.

Plus different tracks favor different cars. Laguna Seca is like a damn go kart track for these cars, so nimbleness wins over everything else. I'll bet on the almighty Ring it would be a lot closer or even reversed results wise.

But again, watch the vid w/sound

Live axle isn't a hindrance on a nice, smooth race surface.

Still.  This car fails to impress when a car that costs a fraction of the price with less than optimal suspension setup and a 9 year old chassis can come within a whisker of it around a race track.

You'd have a point is a fast lap time around a go kart track was the explicit primary objective of this car

It's a Ferrari, it's not expensive because you're necessarily getting "more" than other cars.  It's expensive because it's exclusive and it's a Ferrari.  They aren't marketed or bought because they are a "good value" in any sense of the word.  The GT500 is probably faster around Laguna than an Aston Vanquish.  Any number of cheaper, older cars will smoke a Continental GT around a racetrack at a fraction of the price.  What's your point?  It's a touring car, it's not built for lap times.

And I'd wager Ford spent a fair bit of time tuning the GT500 at Laguna, as they did with the Boss 302.

I know what car out of that list I'd want more. And it's not a Viper, Mustang or Vet.

I'd also have a better chance of getting a Kate Upton lookalike in the Ferrari too. And ride in comfort when I'm going at ballistic speeds.

A 730 hp Ferrari should be a lot faster than a Mustang and should be pretty close to the ZR1.  Don't get me wrong, I really dig this Ferrari, but it really falls short, performance wise.

MrH

Seems to be an anomaly.  Every track time I've seen for that F12 has it slightly faster than a 458.  It beats the new 458 Speciale (which is under 3,000 lbs, 600 hp) around Fiorano by a half a second.

I blame a combination of the track not being a good fit for the car, and Pobst not being the driver every one seems to think he is.

Really?

Currently active in the SCCA World Challenge GT series and the Grand American series' GT class, Pobst was the 2003, 2007, 2008, and 2010 SCCA World Challenge GT champion, the 1996 North American Touring Car Championship title winner, and the 2005, 2006 and 2007 SCCA World Challenge TC vice-champion. He is also a two-time class winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona, in 2001 and 2006.
