Yamaha FZ-09 (bargain of the century)

Check this out right



Honda CB1000R- $12K, ~120HP
Kawa Z1000- $11K, ~130HP
Triumph Striple- $12K, ~100HP

Kawa 650R- $8K, 70HP
Suzuki SFV650- $8K, 70HP

Yamaha FZ-09- $8K, ~120HP

Also pretty light and has a triple for character (saved cost). I'm not crazy about its looks, but I am thinking about trying one out just for shits and giggles. I am so over sport bikes and clip ons.

At the minimum, FZ8 def has to go, FZ1 has to move a little more upmarket. The Z1000 is ditching its current platform and gonna be a straight up naked ZX10R... which I'm not sure is a good idea, but could give room to the Z800 etc.

There are certain segments of the bike world that are booming. Adventure bikes, dirt hybrids and in Europe at least naked bikes. Yamaha could have did what Honda did and used 1 platform to hit all 3 (like they did with the 500s) but with this thing being at a higher price point I guess they figured it would be less risky to make one bike that does it all. I agree that the look doesn't work, and the look is very important for motorcycles. BUT, end of the day, slamming deal. I respect Yami's play on this one, they just made the current versions of me and Speed Racer's bikes irrelevant.

The FZ8 just came out as a replacement for the FZ6, I find it hard to believe they'd be abandoning it so quickly.

This is amazing. It looks amazing, it has stupid power, and a stupid price. Still, $8K is out of my bike price range.

It might not be selling like they wanted. Plus it's pretty expensive and heavy. IIRC it's basically a de-bored FZ1. Shame as I prefer the look of the FZ8 to the FZ-09, but outside of that the FZ-09 is the better bike on paper.

Hopefully the FZ1 gets replaced by something like a 1200-1300cc motor. Naked FJR :lol:

I guess I'd kind of forgotten that the FZ8 had so much commonality with the FZ1.  Same motor but debored and I think the chassis is the same.  So not as much invested in development as I'd thought.

The FJR is heavy as hell.  It doesn't even hide its weight well.  In all honesty, it doesn't feel much lighter than a Goldwing.  And stripping the fairing off isn't going to change that.

I hope they offered a semi-faired version of this bike (like the current FZ1).  I like the package, but I prefer a windscreen.

I find it hard to believe they'll replace the Z1000 with a de-faired ZX10.  They don't even use the same engine currently (the Z1000 is actually a 1050) and the Z's engine is built for standard duty (meaning a fat torque curve).  It's not a detuned supersport motor like the FZ1 or FZ6.  And it's better for it.  The FZ1 is the peakiest motor in its class and is routinely criticized for having no real bottom end to speak of compared to the Z1000/Ninja1K and the Bandit/GSX1250.  Also not sure how well you can adapt a supersport chassis to accommodate standard ergos.

And Kawi already makes a Z800, they just don't sell it in America.  They briefly sold the Z750 in the US a few years back (mid 2000s), but it didn't sell well so they abandoned the middle-weight standard market.

And I knew about the Z800, forgot they don't sell it here though. As far as ergos, all it takes is some bars and lower pegs and you're set. The question is, will it be worth it for Kawi to try to adapt the ZX-10R for naked duty... I'm not sure. It's very likely they may just unleash more horses from the relatively mildly tuned existing motor.

I like that it's a throwback to the triples of the late 70's, early 80's. My dad has a '78 XS750SE. I love the sound of it.

I think chopping some of the junk off(rear light mount) would make it look alot better.

Bleh round headlights on modern bikes are the worst. Striple was an improvement.

It looks like a winner though, at least on paper.

I don't like the insect-like appearance of most modern sportbikes. The EX250 is old school, but I really can't think of many modern fully faired bikes that look better to me.

I like naked bikes like the 919, but I think I'd miss the fairings.

If a bike has round headlights the whole thing has to look old. Likewise if a bike has a modern looking frame, tail, motor, wheels, tank etc its headlights should match. Round headlights on a modern bike = an E30 nose on an F30 body. It doesn't work.

919 works cause it looks old. Big banana seat tail, exposed ribbed motor, chrome pipes... Striple on the other hand is all angular and newish. The face has to match

Naked SV650s didn't look old and they had round lights.

I see these trapezoid lights as being a phase like the rectangular headlights of the early 80s.  Honda started using a rectangular light on the Magna in the early to mid 80s to look "futuristic".  It looked like ass.  They dropped it after a couple of years and went back to a round lamp.

Also, they need to update FZ1 with the current R1 crossplane crank engine. Now that would be badass.
