No, and not only because the Prius has an EPA size classification of "midsize" and not "compact" ;).

OK. How is a CPO Prius not a lightly used quality import car?

I don't even know what is going on now, but whatever you do, don't let her test drive it before you guys buy it.

Lebowski

It's a bit tougher to get a test drive when not purchasing from a rental fleet.

Plus, no need for one when G37x is always the answer /thread.

How come no one suggested the obvious: A diesel!

Assuming her commute isn't more than 70% HWY a diesel wouldn't make sense.

I guess it's the mileage. I didn't realize that the 2.5 was averaging only 19mpg in town in that car. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/23219.shtml

Golf TDI is what she needs.

The 2.5 in the '07 "Rabbit" is shit.  A newer TDI will deliver more than twice the mileage in a car she'll feel right at home in.

If I drove a Prius instead my G37 I would save about $1,600 a year in gas costs. Haven't done the math on insurance.

Or... perhaps a 2012 Honda Insight? It has a hatch type...er.. trunk.

The Insight is horrible.

Even C&D at the time said it was more entertaining to drive than the equivalent Prius model. I'm not saying it's joyful, but in the ultra economy versions of hybrids, you have to look for some bright spots somewhere.

The Insight's hybrid operation is just pretty crude compared to the Prius -- jerky and clunky, and also with much less electric capability.

2o6

And it's worse to drive than the Prius. The Prius has decent freeway manners and more space. The Insight is worse.

Naw not yet. Maybe next year. Your parents experience doesn't sound too good, though I cant imagine it being much worse than the Rabbit compared to the Z. 6/10ths turns in the Z are like 13/10ths in the Rabbit, I'm always recalibrating going between the two lol.

Prius with the "sport kit" is supposedly almost decent....

My thoughts are (admittedly a/ very little experience in this space):  Don't get a hybrid. But, if you decide to get one anyway, just get the Prius.

Also, look at the Camry hybrid too. I had a friend who thought he wanted a Prius, but the Camry Hybrid solved all his issues with power, comfort, and space he had with the Prius.

It feels like a video game. The steering feel is worse than GM MagnetSteers IV. The engine *never* sounds good - just surly CVT growling all the time. The visibility sucks.

What I'm saying is that I think your opinion of the Prius will change dramatically within 10 minutes of driving one.

Is this the current version (2010+)?

Either way, Jetta wagen TDI sounds like the better overall choice.

Damming with faint praise.  The best of a bad bunch is still bad.
