Exterior has the feel of the old car with new cues stuck on the front and the back, but I think it actually isn't. Interior looks pretty stylish, though I'm guessing even fewer Mazda2s will have the nice screen than in the 3, and the base radio isn't especially well-designed.

But of course the big deal will be that it will probably drive really well and have great gas mileage.

If I were in the market to trade the 6 this car would definitely be on my short list, along with the new 6, 3, Focus and Fiesta.

To tie this to another thread, cars like the 2 are probably one of the reasons the Fiat 500 isn't selling well in the US.  Looks like you get a heck of a lot more content and utility in the 2.

Looks like they designed the interior to show Ford how needlessly fussy the Fiesta's is. Job well done... it looks fantastic and very classy.  :golfclap:

Is that interior picture the production version or show concept?

Production, and it's very similar to the new Mazda3.

Galaxy

That interior is absolutely fantastic in its simplicity! Could teach companies like BMW a lesson with their overly fussy designs.

It's a bit goofy in profile, but looks pretty good.

Damn, that is good looking and I love the interior.

Now I'm on the fence. The interior is nice, and I like the front fascia, but the back is clumsy and  the profile is useless. I'm wondering why a 1.5L needs so much hood and real estate. Tr old Mazda 2 was roomy inside for it's short length, this one, not sure.

Xer0

The diesel is more powerful then the gasser in this thing, kinda cool.

Looks like an evolution of the current car's style to me.  And that two-tone leather interior is gorgeous!

I'm so glad Mazda never received the memo saying all modern cars have to be ugly and weird looking.

It's probably going to be really small inside...

Every other car in this segment is pug nosed and stubby. This is a refreshing departure from the current norm.

I mean, as long as it can seat 4 normal size adults in relatively decent comfort

I'd rather this than one of its microvan competitors. Especially if they bring the diesel over

The current Rio is a better looking car, IMO.

r0tor

All of these cars in the segment are horrible value propositions.  For a few grand more you can have a better performing, safer, and more equipped 3 that gets just as good of mileage.

Pointless really.

The same can be said about the neext class up from the 3, too.

I guess this game poops out anything above midsize?  All the large cars start at about 28k IIRC (vs 21k-ish for midsize)

"A few grand more" is also midsizer territory. Slippery slope

I didn't take the time to read about the new 2, so I will compare the last models...

Their prices got within 2 grand.  For the 2 extra grand you got disc brakes, a far superior interior, much better ride and handling, better interior space, better power train... Better everything.  Fuel milage and physical size were pretty close as well.  The sales guy I was talking to was scratching his head as to why anyone would want the 2.

Between the 3 and 6 the refinement gap is greatly filled and the decision between the two comes down to personal size preference and fuel mileage.

The same could be said for the Honda Fit and Civic. If you're buying the car based strictly on commuter values, it would be to tough to not look at the 3 or Civic respectively based off of the pricing.

I must agree with R0tor. You'd have a damn hard time selling me a Mazda2 over the Mazda3. The quality gap in cars of this class is huge! Not just the interior parts but everything in the car.

I'm not a fan of that pop up screen, not in this or any other car that has one like that.  IMO, it looks cheap, like an afterthought.

I think it looks much better than the poor attempts at integrating it into the dashboard.

It also gives the flexibility to design the low, small dashboard, because the traditional instrument panel only needs the HVAC controls.
