The 3 series has a nice back seat for a RWD compact sedan. The car with no rear seat room goes to the ATS and A4.

+1

Current 3 is about the perfect size.

I'd really like to side with you against Char-tard, but you're not making sense. That's like saying the Focus ST compares with the Mustang Convertible. The Mini is a completely different animal that better compares to the upcoming FWD 1-series BMW.

I think people look for a fun car at a certain price, perhaps valuing different types of fun. I'd imagine too that a lot of brand-loyal people would also compare the two, rather than comparing to competitors. It's like the person who says "I bought a Corolla because a Yaris is too small and a Camry is too big."

Agree if 4 doors and a larger back seat is needed. But a more compact and lighter M235 with the buttery smooth 331 hp straight-6 for $10,000+ cheaper is a pretty compelling package... to me anyways.

$53k for an M235 vert. Wow.

Perspective. Try getting a Boxster (less power, no back seat) for $53,000.

It's also lighter and probably drives better.

2 small 4 seat convertibles

The Mustang and Camaro 'verts are just as small inside, but they're okay? No problem if the 2 series had just 2 seats? I don't understand the issue here.

I can't personally compare it to the mini? Shit...

You can compare it to a Ford F350 if you want, but that wouldn't make any sense either.

Lets take off our pedantic enthusiast glasses for a second and look at these cars through the eyes of a normal person. Aside from drive wheels, what is so different from a Mini Cooper S vs a 228i? They even use the same engine for fucks sake. Def much more alike than either to an F350. Dont be a pedant.

IME, the people who buy Mini Coopers usually want a Mini Cooper and don't seriously consider anything else.

What u call me?

Aside from drive wheels, a hatchback, smaller size, taller roof, sideways engine, $15,000 cheaper price, etc etc, the 2 cars are practically identical. Silly me.

No normal person will cross shop a Mini with a 2 series. A ONE series, yes.

Kevin you can do whatever you want man, but you're an outlier on this for sure.

The cars share an engine (in a different state of tune). That's it.

You'd have somewhat more of a point if you got the 1 series hatch over there.

A quick size comparo...

2015 BMW 2-series overall length... 174.9 inches

2005 BMW 3-series overall length... 176 inches

I don't recall too many people griping about the size of the older 3-series convertible...

I much prefer the size of the old 3 series, so now I prefer the 2 series.  It's a stupid thing that cars are expected to get bigger every generation.  All the cars move up in size and then they introduce a car beneath them all to fill the spot the smallest car abandoned.

+1. The 2-series is the new 3.

2o6

The F30 is only marginally bigger than the E90. And the F30 feels like a much smaller car to drive...

I don't understand the fuss about ~4".

I drove an E30 the other day, and although t was cool, the entire car feels like a tin can compared to the E36, or E46, or E90

...they're both small BMW cars with 2.0 turbos....they're comparable for my purpose. And as I said in my original post I said "I wish we had the hatch, so I could compare it to the Mini". The 1 and 2 series are pretty much the same...the 2 series is a booted 1 series...

A coooper S is around 26k for a base Cooper S manual.

A manual 228i is around 31k

Yes there's a gap, but the aren't that much of a difference

And judging from how many older women own these things, they're comparable enough.

I never said they were that similar. I just said Id compare them...because I prefer hatchbacks.

Jesus shit

M235i needs a pair of rear doors... If your going to put 4 seats in a sedan, make them accessible

If it were a sedan, I'm sure they would have.

There's enough goddamn 4 doors on the market. Keep this a 2+2 coupe/convertible.

Its as long enough to be a sedan, its shaped like a sedan, why not just make it a damn sedan?

Turning a sedan into a coupe into another sedan is BMW's specialty now.

By that logic they should make the Camaro and Challenger sedans, to be sold alongside the SS and Charger.

By his logic, every single 2+2 should have 4 doors too because they're all longer than a Focus 4 door sedan.
