After cranking and cranking and cranking, this is the best I got out of her.

Any ideas?

Your primary problem is that it's a MkIV Jetta.

That aside, any ideas? I only paid like $1000 for it. 129K. It's a 2.slow auto.

Any warning lights on in the dash?

Almost sounds like it's not getting fuel, so I'd focus on the fuel system.  Maybe a clogged filter or bad pump.  Maybe bad gas (water in the tank?)

When it does run it seems to run reasonably smoothly, but is there any chance somebody put diesel in it?

I agree with fuel problem. Borrow a fuel pressure gauge fron Autozone

A quick check is to see if it runs while spraying starting fluid, brake clean, gas in a spray bottle, etc., down the throttle body. If it runs good, that rules out spark, compression and timing.

Nope. Not even a CEL. There is a code stored for misfire on cyl 2, but it's also running like trash so it probably doesn't mean anything.

The guy I bought it from says he can't put gas in it, since the pump will click off the second he tries to pump (I'm thinking charcol canister or some EVAP issue). But that wouldn't cause this, would it?

Coolant temp sensor?

MX793

Evap vent, if it's plugged, could cause it not to run.  If the vent is plugged, you'll end up with a vacuum in the tank which, if strong enough, can overwhelm the fuel pump.  Will it run if you take the gas cap off?

Haven't tried but I think these cars have another door in the filler neck so I'm not sure if that'll work

Some gas tanks have a check ball at tue end of the neck that keeps gas from pouring out if you drive the car upside down. Ball could be stuck.

That trap door generally isn't air tight.

12,000 RPM

I had a scare with this when I was working on the Civic that turned out to be incredibly simple

Car would crank, start, run, die in 2 seconds. The intake was loose near the throttle body, fucking with the MAF/MAP sensor readings. Could be something that simple.

I would also get my hands on a VAGCOM reader. It sounds like something electric. Vaya con dios

Something along those lines was my initial guess.

The gas tank thing is odd. Have you tried it yourself, Kevin?

I can't obviously start it to check, but adding gas via can did no change.

However, I did get a new code - P0321 - "Ignition/Distributor Engine Speed Input Circuit Range/Performance"

That points to being a crank angle sensor, which would explain everything.

2o6

Yeah, using my OBDII reader, the car says it's 50 degrees advanced. I don't think that's accurate, the belt looks good and new with no missing teeth.

Does the tachometer work/OBD reader display RPM?

Figured it out!

It's out of time.  :banghead:

T belt is off, but not by much, so engine isn't ruined. 2.slow are interference designs, sort of; theyre kind of forgiving in regards to breaking t belts.

Somehow, my 2.slow has VVT

Has the sproket come loose from the camshaft? This happens. You'll need to weld it, or get a whole new cam.

I don't think so. Especially since it still turns over and runs sort of

Is the tensioner functioning correctly?  Perhaps a bad crank sensor?  Maybe you have a combined fueling and timing issue?

Also, the water pump was leaking and the plugs looked bad. So water pump and belt needed done anyways.
