Banned because of "light pollution". Fuck the EU. So sick of their dictatorial bullshit.

EU Bans Rolls-Royce's Illuminated Spirit Of Ecstasy, Will Have To Be Removed From All Models

It's bad news for a number of Rolls-Royce owners, as well as prospective customers, across the European Union after the automaker confirmed that its illuminated Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament is no longer permitted on the streets.

Rolls-Royce first showcased the illuminated Spirit of Ecstasy with the all-electric 102EX concept back in 2011. The option soon became available on the Phantom, the previous-generation Ghost, the Dawn, the Wraith and the Cullinan.

After being contacted by a number of concerned Rolls-Royce owners, The Daily Mail reached out to Rolls-Royce, who confirmed that the option was removed at the start of 2019 due to a change in European Union regulations relating to lighting on cars as part of a crackdown on light pollution.

"In February 2019 we sent our dealers a bulletin saying we were removing the option of an unlit Spirit of Ecstasy. It was no longer to be sold to customers. It came off the options list," a Rolls-Royce spokesman said.

This isn't just bad news for those looking to purchase a new Rolls-Royce with the illuminated Spirit of Ecstasy, but also owners with Rolls-Royce vehicles already equipped with the £3,500 ($4,570) option as it will need to be removed and replaced.

"Sadly, we are telling our customers that we will by law have to disconnect their Spirit of Ecstasy," the spokesman added. "We are in the process of putting a package together. We shall write to make an offer of a full refund, a replacement silver-plated Spirit of Ecstasy, or another option from our list. We felt it our moral obligation. We sold this option in very good faith. We are forced to retract it now through no fault of our own."

Exterior vehicle lighting requirements tend to be strict for safety reasons, not just "light pollution".  What colors may be used for lights, where on the vehicle certain colors of light may be used (red lights on the front is a big no-no), as well as lighting arrangements and spacing all have safety implications ranging from reducing glare to assisting other drivers in identifying the relative orientation and heading of another vehicle.  Similar requirements exist for lighting on boats and planes for similar reasons.

That is light pollution? You should see the multicolour LED flood lights that rednecks mount on their trucks around here.

Which are illegal for road use in the US.  Practically any aux lighting product at Pep Boys or AutoZone or similar has "not DOT approved, Off-road use only" printed on the box or product itself.

Illegal, but clearly not enforced around here.

If something as abstract as light pollution can be considered an actual thing, then why not stupid regulation pollution? Politician pollution? Excessive wordiness pollution?

Unnecessary roadway light pollution can be a hazard to drivers.  This isn't about being "green", it's a safety concern.  Driving a vehicle with an illuminated figurine out on the end of your hood, within the driver's line of sight, is a distraction that could cause the driver to fail to identify an oncoming vehicle with a single headlamp like a bicycle, motorcycle, or scooter.

It should have a dimmer switch or something. Besides, all Rolls-Royce drivers should be professionals.

Or it should turn off then the vehicle is put in gear.

I've not heard that Mercedes' illuminated grille badges are going away, so clearly it's not a case of trying to eliminate all extra light sources.  My guess is that in this case, it's because the hood ornament is in the line of sight of the Roller's driver, which has potential safety concerns as explained.

And funny enough they don't stock regular filament bulbs for turn signals etc... either- just LED bulbs. So my Odyssey center rear brake light is currently "not DOT approved, off-road use only".

No - it's to minimize upward light output. The goal is zero. It has everything to do with being green. And on this, I fully approve.
