It seems that there are a lot of threads with spyshots of the 1-series coupe. I'm not making an opinion until I see a real one.

Why is this car causing such a fuss?  All it is is a 1-Series with a boot.

1. Because its a BMW, this is the "Luxury Talk" forum, and BMW is the best selling Luxury car brand in the world. (Sorry if that is a bit tough to swallow).
2. Because its the BMW that comes closest to being a rebirth of the 2002 of the 70's.
3. Because its a small, 6-cylinder, sporty, RWD, relatively affordable BMW which the 3 series stopped being a while ago.

Above all, because we're actually going to get it.

From those pictures...

I'm stunned. They managed to pull off the C-Pillar. Now I just want to see what the rear looks like...

If they bring over an M version, I'm going to convince my dad to get it as a weekend toy.

1. Relax.  You seem to think I have a vendetta against BMW.  I didn't mean particularly on here, I meant in general, on the internet.

2.  It doesn't come much closer than the 1-Series 3rd and 5dr which have both been around for a while, and it doesn't look as good as either IMHO.

3.  See #2.

I'd probably agree with Farris - it's because the car will be available in US of A.

Looks good so far, can't wait to see the finished product.  :ohyeah:

The rear bumper still looks horrible and oversized for the car, but other than that it's pretty spiffy.

As for #2, the 2002 was not a hatchback. The 1 series hatch is just a RWD Golf as far as we are concerned, whereas the 1 series COUPE is a reincarnation of the car that put BMW on the sporting map. That's more important than you obviously realize.

Like a fine Detroit wine, this vehicle has aged to budgetary perfection...

i like it... have there been any diesel and/or X-Drive variant rumours floating around?

The car just looks wrong.  Ever watch a video where the aspect ratio is all screwed up and everything is stretched to be really tall.  I feel like I'm seeing something like that here.  Just makes me want to try to resize my screen.

1. Very relaxed now. Cool. My paranoia  :evildude:.

Now, I love the hatch, especially in four doors. But I think I'll like this coupe even more.

Bingo.  Though I'd like to see a turbo four.

A turbo four would be nice. Also maybe a 125i with the true European 2.5L N/A 6. 218hp would be plenty for this car.

Even the benefits of RWD are debatable in a car this size, I don't think AWD would be much use.  They sell diesels in the UK.

I was thinking more along the lines of a turbocharged version of the engine in the 320si, pushing about 210bhp.  170 would be plenty (it'll get the 3 series to 60 in about 8 seconds, so it's not slow), but more is more, and the chassis can obviously handle it.

How are the benefits debatable? Would a Miata/240SX/2002 be as fun if they were FWD/AWD?

Raza

The 1er doesn't seem to handle as well as the GTI, and in a car like this the interior space takes a hit with RWD.

I think I like it, though I'm not sure I'd get it over a hatchback if one were available.

Now I'm just waiting for the Z2.

In a recent Car magazine comparison, the 130i was beaten by both the R32 and GTI.

In Fifth Gear the R32 beats a 130i by a tenth of a second on their very dirty and damp track. The GTI would not outrun either the R32 or the 130i. The 130i's RWD makes it more fun IMHO if not necessarily faster.

But as Top Gear pointed out, even on their dry track the R32 was faster and the 130i was cramped.  Personally, though I'd rather have an R32, the 1ers with lesser engines seems to be enticing choices.  The 130i seems overkill for the size.

I have seen a fair share of reviews that label the 130i as the drivers choice overall.  And, given an LSD, it would likely slaughter the R32 on the track.  Have you watched any of the videos comparing these two cars?  The 130i ALWAYS has massive time killing wheelspin out of corners while the R32 just plants and goes.  Wet tracks only make this worse...

If the R32 had 500 more horsepower, the 130i wouldn't stand a chance.

We can play the if game all day.
