The M2 actually sounds really good.  No idea what Sporty is on about

I prefer how the GM cars sound, but it's not at all out of the realm of possibility that someone could prefer the M2.

Even some of the later, NA I6 BMWs don't sound so great.  S52s and S54s have this metallic rasp that's not particularly pleasant.

The M235 isn't exactly a featherweight, particularly considering the size of it's footprint.

The pony cars have come a long way, particularly in their most recent iterations.  They aren't the clumsy, ill-balanced, straight-line focused machines they used to be.  Pity some are too closed-minded to see past 20 year old stereotypes that they use to judge cars they've never driven.

They are not in the same league as the relatively short wheel based M2 for sheer feelings of adjustability and playfulness ... Much better then past boats, but still a hell of a long way away from being a nimble and fun track car

You seem to know that the pony cars have closed the gap.

They still drive like large cars on a track from my experience from about 4 or so years ago. They may have closed the gap to something like an M3/M4 and be fairly competent, but in terms of sheer driver enjoyment that level is a far cry from a M2

It would be interesting if MT didn't pull the M2 from best driver's car as that would have put it directly up against the V8 1LE which was in the test as well.

Well, the V6 1LE beat the M2 in the leftovers competition, so there's that....

Plus the fact that the M2 was in the leftovers rather than the main event doesn't speak well of it vs the SS. This isn't to say the M2 is bad... but the SS 1LE finished 4th out of 12, and the GT350R finished 2nd. I think MT is far removed from the days that it would crown something like a Chevy Citation COTY. And the pony cars def have their flaws. But it does seem like the V8 ones are in a league above the M2 in driving experience.

For my money, I don't know. I like smaller cars and 6 bangers over V8s. But if one is in the market for an M2 I think it's irresponsible to not check out the SS 1LE and GT350, or even the plain jane GT with the performance pack. FFS, Mustang is the top selling sports coupe in Germany. We can't deny these cars anymore.

I think that win largely came down to the lap time.  Given that it's considerably more powerful, the M2 simply blew the LT1LE away down the straights.  They were pretty evenly matched in the corners, with the Camaro perhaps making up some ground.

You're right.  It seems the performance car head2head comparisons usually come down to lap times.

More than 12 years ago the LS7 at ~550 hp was but a small cam upgrade away from the 585 hp obtained on pump gas (it took a tune and 114 octane race gas to get 600 hp).

And let's not forget the LS motor is smaller, lighter, less complicated and unlike that heavily customized Coyote, warrantied and 100% daily driveable.

The Coyotes aren't "garbage" but for ~25 years Ford has been unable to fully tap OHC potential, and has thus been playing second fiddle to the GM pooprod.

Sure, but it's 7 litres.  7 litre engines were putting out over 600 bhp in the '60s.

Lingenfelter has 650 hp LS7 crate engines, on pump gas.

The garbage comment was just to rile up any Coyote fans. It's a good engine, but I was surprised at its (lack of) performance in that video.
