The Plastidip thread

So I decided to make a Plasti Dip thread as it seems that I'm not the only one interested in this stuff. I know MrH and giant_mtb were interested in seeing the outcome of this, so here are some pics so far:

I already posted some pics in the chat thread of my badges. Here they are again:

I decided to redo my left and right rear emblems. To show how easily the stuff comes off:

After I was done, I still didn't like it so I decided to debadge it.

More pics:

Preparation:

From my research and Youtube watching, having a thick strip of excess material is preferable, as it makes it easier to pull off. Also, make sure to have 4-5 coats on parts that you haven't masked off, but are going to peel anyways, just to make it easier to peel off. If you get overspray, it's not a big deal, but it's a bitch to try and rub off. I used a clean cotton cloth and just rubbed it off and all of it came off, but it's hard to see on darker cars like mine and not fun to pull off.

I also painted my chrome hardtop strikers. One of them still has a bit of chrome showing, which I'll fix later when I get more paint.

Finished result of the windshield frame/header:

I also washed the car today, and the Plastidip was fine, even under a pressure sprayer:

I ordered the metallic gold paint kit almost a week ago and they haven't even shipped it yet. I'll get more pics once I actually get the paint.

Get yourself a can of Plasti Dip and post your results here!

Plastidip is cool. My buddy who has a B5 S4 plastidipped his rims black. They actually look pretty cool.

There's nothing on my car I want to Plastidip, but I wouldn't hesitate to do it if there were.

Maybe I should plastidip Accent's wheel covers, then put them on over the gold ("Rosemary") hammered finish steelies.

How does the stuff hold up to heat?

MR2's rims were powdercoated gunmetal grey by previous owner and it's flaking and looking awful. Plastidip would be cheaper than getting them re-finished

I kind of wonder how this stuff would hold up on gun furniture.
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

Might try that for my wheels if they offer a metallic grey.  Brake dust is crazy now with the HP+ pads.

I'm not sure why I would want to do this.

I didn't want any permanent changes on my car, especially without taking it to a professional. Now that I've seen what the windshield frame, I'd definitely like to paint it matte black (professionally). It all peels of so easily that messing up isn't really a reason to be scared.

Going for gold wheels.

I'm saving up for Enkei RPF1's in gold (kind of on the back burner in terms of saving, but someday I'd like to buy a set) so I'd like to just try some gold wheels on my car for now.

They are supposed to hold up to heat, up to 200F (don't quote me on that) I think. Normal weather temperatures will be fine, but I wouldn't try using it on brake calipers, exhaust or anything under the hood.

What the hell is plastidip?

It's the stuff you dip the handles of tools like crescent wrenches and pliers in to get a rubberized gripping surface.  In the past few years they've developed other uses in an attempt to expand their market.

You should Rhino-line your phone.  Waterproof and bomb-proof.

Time to make an anonymous tip to his local PD about a green miata that seemed to be involved in an accident and drove away?

Thanks! I'm planning on picking up another can tomorrow and redoing them on Sunday. I'll post pics then.

Also, the website (dipyourcar.com) still hasn't shipped the paint, and isn't responding to my emails. I might file a Paypal dispute and then just dip the wheels black instead of gold. I'll give them the weekend to sort their shit out before trying to get my money back.
