The Greatest Cars Thread

Post a car that, in your opinion, was/is a great car. Tell us why you think so.

I'll start:

Honda CRX

Lighweight, nimble, inexpensive. Extremely reliable and fantastic fuel economy. The HF model was rated at 55 mpg HWY. Excellent visibility and ergonomics. Brilliant for squirting through traffic as well as track and autocross days.

I don't think I need to explain.

It's hard to believe this design comes from the 1950's. Then coupled with the swiveling headlights, front-wheel-drive, semi-automatic transmission and most of all the hydropneumatic suspension, the car is a work of art.

Vinsanity

To steal the words from our very own Raza, this car symbolized the idea that luxury was about quality, not gadgets.

Saturn SL1/2 and SC1/2.

Greatness can be relative, and there's a reason I choose this car. I've noticed recently that a large percentage of early '90s cars still on the road, 20 years later, are these early Saturns. They're still everywhere. The car itself is unremarkable, but I'm starting to believe it is the most reliable car to come out of that decade.

If you ignore the quality issues, this car pissed in everyone's cereal in 1995. Much more standard HP, more room, interesting design, and it's a blast to drive.

I would love a '77 Bandit Trans Am.

Hate those. The only car of that generation I like is the Camaro IROC.

Mainly for looks.  Thing looks like it's a 250mph car, so sleek.

As the owner of one, I totally agree. It may not be the sportiest car, but it's decent to drive (SL2s are plenty quick for everyday driving and it has good handling/steering) and ours has been pretty solid. Only a few small problems, but nothing major after 153k miles.

S204STi

02-07 WRX.  A complete hoot to drive, can also carry people and their stuff, all for reasonable money.  And generally still capable of keeping up with much more powerful machines when the roads get interesting.

MX793

Lumina Eurosport.  What other car had a combination luggage rack/spoiler?  Oh, and it raced in NASCAR, so it's like a street legal race car.

Miata.

There's a good case for this. After all, the Miata basically saved the idea of the sportscar from the ignomany of the latter MG years, made it relaible, accessible and modern in a way that no other car has yet been able to do.

I'm still nominating the studebaker GT Hawk.
