I wonder why Mitsubishi sales have tanked in the U.S. over last 10 years but have doubled in Canada?

http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2012/10/mitsubishi-brand-sales-figures-usa-canada.html

My cousin owns a Mitsubishi dealership near Toronto.  Don't see him that often.  Maybe once a year.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but that table suggests U.S. sales have almost doubled since 2010...

They're cheap, and Canadians are more forgiving to fuel-efficient cars no matter how bad they are.

Also, I recall Canadian Nick saying how deeply discounted they are. He was going to buy a new Lancer for his son awhile back for like 12K Canadian before tax.

Too they can't give away Lancers like that, here. I'd take on another loan for that kind of deal.

The Evo 1) is still on sale!?; 2) only has 291hp?; 3) still only comes with a 5MT on the base model; 4) only has an ACT on the MR; and 5) and starts at $34,495!?

Fuck....BLACK is a $250 optional paint color.  It's the only color that costs extra.

Holy shit...and a loaded GSR is still $2,000 cheaper than a comparable 320i xDrive, which does not appear to be available with a manual anymore.  There is still hope.  The Evo has just shot up to the top of my list for new cars once I get a job again!  Evo GSR with premium package has leather, a sunroof, a stick, and an available nav system.

Black should be the base color, all others cost extra.
But maybe they do more finish work on the black, since it shows orange peel so easily. Or it's sparkly. Sparkles are expensive.

The 5-speed maybe adequate for a ralky stage, but it needs a 6th gear for MPGs and for a higher top speed than 130(?) @redline. lol

Damn.  Then I'll get a used one.  Still a better choice than getting one of the myriad entry luxury options that all blend together.  As long as it has the premium package, I'll be happy.  I can live with a plug-in nav system (or just use my phone).

Over the last decade, Mitsubishi has halved their sales in the U.S. and doubled their sales in Canada.  They have 1.1% marketshare in Canada and 0.6% marketshare in USA.  Just interesting.

The Lancer and Mirage usually have great incentives, and sometimes the SUVs are great deals as well. They're still very good cars (Mirage excepted), and when you cross shop a discounted RVR for $22,000 vs a CRV at $32,000, it's a no-brainer for most people. Right now at the local dealer, a base Mirage is discounted to $9995, a base Lancer is $13,995, and a base RVR can be had for $19,995. Of course it's hard but not impossible to actually get them at that price (like Kevin said, I was persistent and they would have found a $13,000 Lancer for me if I followed through), the advertised prices get people into the showroom.

2o6

Thing is, though - in the US you can get a base Manual Elantra for about 13.5K around the model changeover

I have thought about it long and hard

The EVO is such an awesome thing though.  It's pretty terrible at being a car, it's loud, gets terrible fuel economy, all of the controls are super heavy, and it's expensive, but use it as the AWD missile its intended as and it's pretty much the coolest thing ever.

Or you could just get an STI that has a better AWD system, (probably) a bigger aftermarket, and knowing that the company will still be in business till the end of the warranty.

The EVO has a better AWD system since it has that active yaw control and torque vectoring, aftermarket support is a moot point since both as massive but the EVO 2.0 is more mod friendly than the Subbie 2.5, and most EVO owners void their warranty in like the first 3 months of ownership anyway lol.

I don't mod cars anyway, since I'm an adult.

An Evo would be plenty from factory.

Fair point on the last two, but I thought the Evo still had that silly FWD biased AWD, whereas the Subaru's was more rear biased?

Technically, Subaru's AWD is FWD based as well.  When Subaru still built 2WD Imprezas, they were FWD.  Not sure about the latest CVT drivetrain, but in the past automatic Subies sent most of their power through the front wheels until slip was detected.  Manuals had a constant 50/50 split under all circumstances.

More recent STIs can operate between 35/65 and 50/50 (f/r).  Evo's are normally 50/50 but can shuffle up to 80% to either front or rear axle.

23 mpg highway on Premium gas isn't super horrible.  A V8 Mustang is 25.  A BMW M3 slushbox is 24.  More importantly the 2016 Subie WRX 2.5 L, 4 cyl, Manual 6spd, Turbo which runs on premium is 23.

In fairness, the RVR/Outlander Sport is closer to an HR-V than a CR-V.

Old worn out carbureted pickup hauling a moderate load can push 27 MPG straight highway going with traffic on 10% ethanol. Explain why a modern fuel injected aerodynamic extra-geared cruise-controlled fancy car can't match that.

Gearing and tighter emissions controls.

And FWIW, the truck I bought (early 2000's dodge ram with a V6) barely gets ~18-19 MPG on the highway (gets 12-13 MPG around town).

I'm just guessing... Because that pickup has low horsepower and will do 0-60 in 60 seconds?

Mustang and M3 have ~140 more horsepower.  The turbo Mustang, which is about the same power as the Evo, is close to 30 mpg.
