I'm swinging out to take a look at this 911 tomorrow, since it is so close to my house, and the price is good.  What do you guys think?  Should I try to fulfill a lifelong dream, or should I look into something like a 2003 Boxster S?

Do you have $39000?

I thought you didn't like convertibles?

I love convertibles!

And this would be replacing the Passat, so 39K is feasible on the revised budget.

I was originally looking at 993s, but I found several 996s at the same price level (even a 964 Turbo, but I don't think I want to go that old, 1991).

would your parents honestly sign the papers on a 911 for you?

J86

Oh, and 993s are cooler, but shit I wouldn't turn down any 911

Yeah--honestly, more readily than on an Evo, STi, or even a WRX.

Yeah, I mean, the interior has to be in good shape and it has to have the right options, but it should work.  I might be able to move on it next week, even.

I have personally never been a fan of the 996, but if you like it go for it.

Interesting set of criteria they have..

Shit so long as it has a stick who gives a damn?  It's a 911!

My dad would also prefer I have a 911 than a G35 or 350Z, believe it or not.  He's very German biased, and he knows I love Porsches more than anything else.

You live in Pennslyvania, and you want to drive a 911 convertible year around?

Personally, if I were you, I'd be looking for a 911 Carrera-4S coupe of the same generation and mileage.

Nope.  The Carrera is rear engine, which means the straight line traction is going to be great (and this has TCS) and it will throttle steer easily with TCS (or PSM, as Porsche calls it) off.

It will probably be easier than my E320.

Sure, it'd have good starting traction, but I would think a car with that much rear weight bias would have it's tail sliding all over the place when you try to go anywhere but straight.

That's called "throttle steer", MrH.  Besides, I'd be judicious about snow usage anyway.

Having a tail happy car can be a bit tiresome after awhile.  By using the words "throttle steer" you're trying to make a negative into a positive.

A negative for inexperienced drivers.  Throttle steer makes snow driving, for me, a bit easier and more fun than driving a FWD car.  Remember, I've had both in snow, and I still prefer RWD.  I'd give up the stability to turn easier.

Convertables are fine where the weather gets crappy, so long as you can store it under something hard when it snows. Rear-wheel drive is fine too. Granted, my Miata didn't have nearly as much power as a 911, but with snow tires, I bet the Porsche will do fine. (Of course, you salt the roads out there...)

RWD 911 is fine.  My gfs dad drives a 993 rear-round through RI winters no sweat, all aobut good tires!!

SJ_GTI

Very cool.

Personally I would suggest a hardtop 911...you could probably get something newer with less miles for the same money.

I agree that you should be fine in the winter even with a convertible. I lived in SJ about 10-15 minutes outside Philly and I drove a Z3 all year round fine. Thinking back I probably should have gotten snow tires in winter rather than driving on summer tires, but even still I never had any traction issues nor did I ever lose control driving in the snow. Of course since you had an E320 you are probably ware of all this anyway.

Anyway good luck, hope it works out for you.

Raza

I'd prefer a coupe (though the convertible is only about one utile less) as well, but this is only 15-20 minutes from my house, and it's the right price.  I'd prefer it black, but blue is a good color as well.

Beautiful car, although I would much rather have a Coupe.  But still, it looks great, and hell, its a 911!

I prefer the 996 Coupe, but if  I bought a 964 or 930 I would have to go with the convertible.

TBR

Just saw the pic (my connection doesn't like pictures from autotrader for some reason). That is a beautiful color on the 996.

Raza

See, if I were to go anything older than the 996, the cabriolet would be out of the question due to its cumbersome design, with the soft boot, and how awkward it looks when the roof is raised.

Well if I got a 911 older than the 993 (or 996 really) it wouldn't be a daily driver, so I would probably always have the top down. And, they look a lot better with the turbo body kit imho (the 964 that is).
