We've all seen it. Cars dumped in inappropriate places by careless owners. Cars hogging two or more parking spaces. Cars parked so badly you sometimes wonder if they have been abaondoned by thieves. Here is your chance to highlight these adventures in bad parking. Based on an idea shamelessly ripped-off from a couple of other mototing sites, I present the Official CarSPIN Bad Parking Hall of Shame! Feel free to contribute any instances of bad parking you happen to witness.
Let's kick things off with this example of seriously bad parking. Obviously, the driver of this Mercedes E Class thinks he's too important to park up with the peasants inside the parking garage. Because he drives a Mercedes and is therefore "Special", he feels entitled to park OUTSIDE the garage, on the sidewalk! And partially block the exit in the process!

"It's okay guys, I drive a hybrid."
If it were a perfect world, every car made today would be under 180" long and drivers would be able to park them with ease.
I love PlastiCar's size for that reason. Subie Doobie was the same story.

Nice!
In this picture, you can notice that it's standard procedure to park on the grass. This CLK550 is too good to park on the grass and stuck to the pavement.

Didn't have a camera on me but I noticed an Escape today parked on the side of the street pretty far away from the curb.
I used to be an amazing parker, but recently my parking has become just mediocre. The hell is that?

Comment: "Why on earth do people get multiple clamps / boots? Is it because you could swap the tire out for a spare, and most people don't have two spares? Is that a real issue? I'm so confused"
Holy mother of  .
My parking has always been mediocre. I don't know why. I drive my car through narrow openings (~2" clearance on either side) at speeds much greater than I should, thread a god damned needle, but do you think I can parallel park worth a damn?
I can still parallel park fine, but recently my perpendicular parking has been less than stellar. Maybe it's because I drive too many vehicles... (Explorer, MG, 944, Grand Cherokee, Tahoe, Dodge 2500 crew cab, Chevy 2500 crew cab...). I'll blame it on that.
LOLS I used to parallel the minivans in spaces people wouldn't put a Focus. It's been a while though...
In HS I used to piss people off cuz they'd park on one side of the spot to keep people from parking next to them (not leave enough room) but my 78 Subie was so skinny I'd park there anyway...

I feel this photo Teuton posted in the Spotted Today thread deserves to featured as an example of bad parking. Yes I know it's a very expensive Lamborghini but it's parked in a nearly empty car park. Do you really need to hog FOUR parking spaces? Nice car but a parking fail. It deserves to be here.
It's better to take four spaces in an empty lot than a full one, eh?

Even in an empty parking lot, using four spaces is just being a dickhead.
Maybe, but if I had spent $TwiceTexas on a car, I don't think I would mind being a dickhead when I parked.
this is the problem I'd have driving around in a car that costs $TwiceTexas. sure, it's a marvelous piece of engineering, but if I'm too paranoid to take it out on public roads, then what's the use in buying something like that if I can't enjoy it?

Looks like a kit car from that angle.
I have a car with authentic history and heritage that goes to the grocery store, the strip mall, home depot, etc. It is never, absolutely never, parked in more than one spot. Like I posted earlier, that kind of parking is just asking to have the car keyed. Park the car properly and people walk by and think or remark, "Nice Car". Park like a dick head and some people get irritated and think they need to make a statement in your paint.

A few weeks ago, I had to park next to a new Camaro whose driver side was over the line, putting me to park with less than a foot's clearance from the car. This was at a hotel near the SFO airport, so you could kind of tell that almost every car in the lot (including the Camaro) was a rental.

Well my sister gets her drivers license in January and it turns out she is terrible at parking, a Coblat too at that.
The woman driving this massive Toyota Sequoia (it's always a woman driving these obnoxious things) made two attempts at pulling this behemoth into the parking space. Satisfied with a job not-so-well done, she went inside the supermarket.

In my old parking garage, which had really tiny spaces, you would always see a half-dozen cars in a row all parked at the same angle, as one person messing up forced everyone else to mis-park all the way down the line.

We have immensely crowded parking at work yet someone saw fit to straddle two spots. No one else took the spot but I wasn't so forgiving and spent five minutes crowding my car into the spot. I left a note on the windshield that said, "PLEASE PARK PROPERLY. THANK YOU." By lunch someone had indeed complied.

There aren't words for the ridiculousness that handicapped parking in parking lots has become, either. I swear they waste enough space for 5-6 handicapped spots you could put 40 regular cars in...
From a few weeks ago. I'm on the right.
This pissed me off so bad. And the Sorento was so jacked up, too, all sorts of dents, scratches........

Yeah, I was boxed in worse than that by a huge Odyssey with BABY ON BOARD signs.
Luckily I stayed at work later than that bastard, so he was gone by the time I had to use the car again.
One thing I like about the MG is that I can park in some improbable spaces, which often makes it inconvenient for the jackass who parked wrong in the first place to get out. One thing I like about cell phone cameras is that I can take a photo of the license plate and parking job of said jackass.
The only way the situation could be improved (aside from people not parking like assholes) is if it was a beater Geo Metro that I wouldn't care about if it got dinged.

That's why my dad backs his '71 into our garage after every drive, no problem. And the visibility out the back is just about the same.
I find that a pair of stick-on convex mirrors makes for easy placement when parking: they allow you to "look down" at the lines and get your vehicle perfectly centrally parked every time. They're also great for their stated purpose: eliminating blind spots.

Ahh, didn't see it.. at least it's an empty parking lot. It's even more frustrating when the parking lot is full.
I don't really care if trucks with trailers park funny so long as there are other spaces in the lot. It's probably a wise move to keep people from parking too close to you and not leaving enough clearance to swing the trailer around without hitting anything.
Yeah, I when I have a trailer, I park like a jackass so I don't clip anyone on the way out. A while ago, I had the longest 2500 Dodge makes with an 18'x6-8' trailer parked lengthwise across, like, five or six spaces.
I also don't really care about crappy parking jobs if there are plenty of other spaces available. If it's the fault of some jackass who doesn't understand lines and courtesy that I have to drive around for another five minutes, then I get pissed.

No offense, but there aren't any lines, so you can't really give them too much shit. Plus, it's possible that they were there before the car to the left of them and it's actually the car on the left that is parked shittily. (obviously, I can't see if there's another car further left, but yeah.)

Actually there are lines that clearly mark the parking spaces. Problem is they're only visible in great weather as they're a lightly darker shade of the gray concrete. In my opinion they should have just been painted over in white so everyone can see them (or red - a popular color for parking space markers here).
I dunno man, I don't see much in the way of lines marked. I'm in agreement with giant_mtb.

There are actually some moronic motorcyclists here that would park their bike in the middle of such a parking spot.
You can actually park them on a sidewalk "legally" here. Cops won't do shit about that, but no, they need to take away a valuable parking space from a car!

My Mercedes has a block heater. If you leave your car outside during cold winter days there is an electrical cord under the hood that you can plug into an electrical socket and it keeps the engine warm so it starts easier.
My dad's old Cherokee had one and it wasn't even a diesel.

AFAIK we never used those over here. Most older MB diesels started after awhile in the winter.
It's in places where it gets really, really cold, that this might be very useful. :ohyeah:

Yeah, like this morning! I had to drive somewhere and the 118i takes "forever" to get warm. The heated seats were a nice option and work right away but the heater itself requires a warm engine and that's the problem with the 118i - takes forever to get warm, even in traffic.
Is it me, or do 6- and 8-cylinder engines get warmer faster than 4-cylinders? Based on my experiences I'd say they do!
Block heaters are pretty common here.

All of my four cylinder Volvos had heaters capable of warming a small house. Leave it to people who live in a country that straddles the Arctic Circle to make a kick-arse car heater! Mind you, their air conditioning systems are a joke. I've had the one in the 740 rebuilt four times!

Interesting question. Of the 4 cars I've owned (two 4-bangers and two V6s), the 4-cylinder engines warmed up significantly faster. My Mazda warms up very quickly, and the heater will positively cook you.
I'm not sure if the block heater works on my Benz. It's been in the shop all winter and now it's gotten warmer outside.

It warms up faster if you don't turn the heat on until it's warmed up.
Thanks for the insight regarding the heaters and engine warm-up. I always felt that 6-cylinders+ warmed-up much quicker than 4-cylinders. I've never really timed how long it takes for the 118i to warm up though (doesn't have an engine temperature gauge - was an optional feature ).

Indeed. I hadn't noticed them! I think this type of parking is typical of people that park far away from the doors of the stores. I just about always park far away and try not to park next to other cars (I'm super paranoid about scratches/dings), and have found that most other people that park as far away as me see it as a "well, there aren't any other cars so I can park however the fuck I want" ticket.

Yeah, parking big trucks is a bitch. It's not too hard to get it to go where you want (actually pretty easy if your bed is empty and you reverse), but spaces are so small in a lot of places, that you end up looking like an asshole.
As a side note, I would rather reverse a big truck than reverse most cars.

I had lunch there when I was camping with the family last July. One of the scenic pull offs on the south side of the Kancamagus Highway in the White Mountains. I can't imagine how some boob managed to park like that. Maybe he was using the curb as a lift so he could slide under and change his oil? Then he could just toss the used oil over the stone wall and be on his way.
Looks like I'm not the only one frustrated by bad parking. Some enterprising person has come up with a clever (and somewhat expensive) way to vent your anger at those who can't park properly. Just place one of these hang-tags on the offending car and, if you really have no life, stick around to see the owner's reaction when he/she returns!

I actually love those. They're less offensive/asshole-ish than some of the other ones I've seen, but still express a high level of distaste for the offender's parking skills. The "Bless your heart" one is cute too- I can think of dozens of Civics and Cadillacs I've seen that deserve that...

It's a game I play when I'm bored with sitting in traffic, but its been done to death in other forums & is not very PC. FWIW my accountant (middle aged Anglo-American) drives a 10-year-old W211 E350 with zero bling.

White Cadillac with Florida plates. The driver is probably well into his 80s and half blind, so he can't see the lines.

Looking at the background snow and water on the ground I wonder if this one was parked while there was a layer of snow covering the lines. You get some really funny looking parking lots around here when there is an inch of snow on the ground when everyone parks in the morning and by noon the snow has melted off.
Really?

that is a large truck.
Depending on the size of that space, that might be the best way to park that truck. Otherwise it might be either partially sticking out into the lane or making the second space too small to use anyway.

Yep, it is. And I'll bet you eighty-bazillion dollars the knuckle-dragging neanderthal who owns this ridiculous monstrosity has NEVER carried or towed anything with it!
I think people buy duallies to tow, not just for the usual poseur-show.

Stupid motorcycle driver. I was in dire need of a parking space yesterday and this was the only one with a friggin motorcycle parked on it. Does this dumbass really have to make use of this precious parking spot? A small motorcycle, eh roller, like that can easily be parked on a sidewalk in M?hldorf, the cops don't give a shit about that. But no, Mr. Genius here has to rob us all of a precious parking spot.
Upon searching for more parking spaces I found similar situations where a motorcycle or a little Vespa is taking up one precious parking space. Bitch. :rage:

Perhaps the M-B driver is only semi-disabled & so is only entitled to half the disabled space.
By the way, the combined area of all America's unused disabled spaces is equal to the land area of Spain. Their heat island effect is causing the alarming rise in global temperatures.
The annual Medicare/Medicaid cost savings of the health benefits gained by making disabled people walk from the far ends of our parking lots, would equal the gross national product of Australia.

Everyone shops at Walmart here, so the stereotypes are a bit harder to apply. After 1 or 2 in the morning, sure, but during the day it's no different than anywhere else.
Tonight I literally saw 14-15 large SUVs/trucks parked over the line or with their tail hanging out a couple of feet, all in the same parking lot. I'm not sure WTF people were smoking tonight. I wish I had a camera with me.
Bugatti Veyron owner slapped with a ticket for parking in a disabled space.

Although you can't tell from this photo due to the light reflecting off the sign in left of this picture, that sign does indeed say "No Parking". However, plenty of idiots (like the owner of this Nissan Altima) don't seem to care. This is outside a busy supermarket and the people who park here make backing out of the proper spaces (just out of frame, to the right of this shot) very difficult.
Taken from a different angle. Nissan Altima driver (fat 30-ish male, looks thick as a plank) has waddled back out to his car and can be seen shutting his door whilst I grab a snap of another offending car (Lexus IS300) parked behind.
As I'm leaving the supermarket I notice a Ford Escape has backed into the spot vacated by the Nissan and then a woman in a red Cadillac SRX drives past another "No Parking" sign and parks in front of the Lexus. Can't any of these people read?

We have a lot of trees come down in D.C. come down that never tilted at all. This seems like tempting fate here.
Well, I don't think the tilt increases the chances the tree will fall; just guarantees the direction it eventually will fall.

I could park my little 1er here but my parents couldn't park their E-Class in their spot because they couldn't use the space to maneuver. This asshole parked here for FOUR DAYS. We complained to the management and it took them FOUR DAYS to call a towing company to have this bastard towed away.

Even worse - that motorcycle is taking away a parking spot for a poor Ford Excursion driver who now can't park anywhere! Bastards!
I always feel that there should be dedicated motorcycle parking lots. All to often someone parks his POS Vespa or scooter on a large car parking space. That annoys me.
There are dedicated lots in places that regularly have a good number of bikes. Colleges usually have them, since mopeds and motorcycles are popular with poor college kids who can't afford a car. But most places just don't have enough demand for a parking lot section like that.

I get hassled about it all the time...but what do they want me to do? My work has no motorcycle parking. I have already given up parking in a covered spot because that really pisses some people off even though my seat and controls are on fire after sitting out in the sun all day.
I normally park diagonally right at the very bottom of a parking space with my nose or tail sticking out - i'm afraid someone's going to be texting and barrel into a spot and not see the bike in time, or they're going to try to "share the space if I park it like I did for the photo.
I just can't win, I guess.

I'm guilty of sometimes parking in handicapped and motorcycle spots.
1. What is an "emergency parking only" spot even used for? I understand a fire lane, but what emergency requires its own parking spot?
2. If you make a motorcycle only spot, you should mark it differently, with multiple smaller spots instead of one normal, car-sized spot.

Considering it's always fucking freezing here, there are no motorcycles around (except sometimes in the spring). Those spots go wasted anyway. As for handicapped spots, when the whole lot of a place is full and there are like 8 handicapped spots, with like 2 occupied (at the most), it's just plain inefficient for me to not use them. Douchiness be damned.
I hate the idea of handicapped spots, honestly.

IME 50%+ of licensed handicapped parkers either fake it (limp when people are looking don't limp when they're not, which I see often from the 2nd floor stretching room at my gym) or chose to put themselves in a handicapped position (morbidly obese). Not sure in your state but in mine it's state law that such spots have to be provided, which is TOTAL BS of course. If it weren't, and property owners did so of their own volition I don't think it'd be a big deal really. People would still cheat it though ;).

There was one spot I used to derive some sort of pleasure out of taking up last year. There was this morbidly obese bitch of an RA who had a placard solely because she was, well, morbidly obese. Fuck her, she needed the exercise anyway.

The very fact that the system exists (only to serve those who, for the most part, cheat it), is what I have a problem with. So fuck it.
It also serves the people that are genuinely handicapped.

If there are 8 handicapped spots in a packed lot, where no more than 2 handicapped spots are used up, would you not call that a plain waste? I'm sure there are people who use them that are genuinely handicapped, but I'd wager the ratio to handicapped spots to people who genuinely need them (I also question how much one would genuinely need one in any instance. There is a difference between "need" and "would be convenient.") is very high.
Let it be noted that I generally do not park in handicapped spots. I only do it when the parking lot is absolutely packed and there are a solid number of handicapped spots just sitting pretty.

Well ain't you a bag of dicks.
1. The consequence if you can't find a nearby parking spot is that you have to walk a little farther. The consequence if a disabled person can't find a nearby spot, or two spots/a handicapped spot if they have a wheelchair to get in and out, may be that they can't go to the store or wherever you are.
2. Many disabilities are legitimate and invisible, so "gee they look fine" is invalid.
3. Even obese people might have a disability that's not related to their weight, and they may even be fat because of some disability, so "gee they're just a fatty and need the exercise" is invalid. And that's not even discussing that morbid obesity can be basically a mental disorder.

Few expectant mothers? It's a furniture store. They sell nursery furniture too. Unless you're living in a fairly small town, there are pregnant people everywhere.
When my wife was pregnant ( late stages ), she never used the spots. However, she couldn't count how many times she'd see some jackhole parking in either a handicap spot or an emergency lane for no good reason other to save themselves from walking an additional 30 feet.

People Who Know How To Fucking Park On Brink Of Extinction.
DRIVERS who can position their car in the middle of a parking space at a supermarket are sliding closer to extinction, conservationists have warned.
Research teams have recorded a sharp decline in numbers over the last decade, despite strenuous efforts to educate the public about how easy it is to just put your fucking car in the middle of a parking space.
Dr Tom Logan, head of species protection at the WWF, said: "There is a series of white lines separated by spaces roughly the same width as a car, plus a little bit more. Let's think of that as the first Great Big Fucking Clue shall we?
"As we approach, we then have to ask ourselves: 'do I park on the white line, do I straddle the white line or do I get my huge, chocolate-covered face out of my fat, greedy, unwashed arse and just put the fucking car in the middle of the fucking space?'"
Conservationists have blamed the crisis on a combination of poaching, loss of habitat and an unbelievable fucking selfishness by a bunch of total and complete bastards who deserve to die on a spike.
"There are now less than 50 people in the UK who are able to do this," said Dr Logan. "That's not just a tragedy for our planet, it's doing my fucking head in every time I go to Homebase."
WWF warned that drivers who can park in the middle of a space will soon share the fate of people who knew not to park four feet from the fucking kerb, extinct since 1993.
Dr Logan added: "A fucking mountain gorilla could do this with its fucking eyes shut, but for some reason the average British motorist seems to think every car park in the world was made just for them.
"Or maybe they've heard that if they park on the white line Graham-fucking- Norton is going to jump out from behind a bottle-bank and send them on holiday to Orlando.

I got back out and waited till she got out of the car before I started to set up the shot. Once she got out I conspicuously took the shot. She gave me a puzzled look but then figured out what I was doing and then ignored me and walked away. (The sign says NO POST OFFICE PARKING and that is where she was going).

There's an "expectant mothers" spot at my supermarket.
Yeah, they have a "mother's with young children" spot at a supermarket near me. Amazingly, a friend of mine with a little kid was ranting and seething with anger on Facebook this weekend because some old person dared to take the "mothers with kids" space. Because, ya know, an elderly person should have to walk three aisles to the front door while an able bodied girl in her 20s with her kid must find that so difficult.
I will ignore those signs if there are no other spaces around. What the hell do I care? I never take handicap spaces, though.

LoL. They have those in the Costco by my house. One day I pulled my LR2 into one of them and at the same time, a guy in an Escalade was pulling into the space next to me. We both got out of our cars at the same time, looked at each other, and burst out laughing.

I think I can defend the van in that case. I just saw that scenario a day ago.
He's parked like that because it does appear the van is equipped with a wheelchair lift. Most minivans that I see tend to have a raised rear suspension. Perhaps where some of the motor for the lift is placed.
I was about to whip out my camera in this very scenario yesterday until I saw the sliding door open and the lift detract to the ground. I felt like an idiot.
Okay, but why isn't is parked in a disabled space? This was at Target and there's something like 20 disabled spaces right in front of the door. There's a wheelchair emblem on the plate so I wonder why they've parked in a normal space like this?

If it's anything like the spaces I see, there isn't a lot of room in the handicap parking spots. They are just regular sized stalls. The van needs almost two stalls. One to park the van, and the second space to allow the wheelchair lift to lower to the ground, and the person in the chair has to be able to maneuver their way out of the lift and be on their way. If a car then parks in that second spot, the wheelchair cannot enter the van.
The photo you have above is how I typically see these vans parked. Sometimes they just disembark directly in front of the store and then go park, but some stores get their asses up in the air because they want to keep the lane open for emergency vehicle parking and such.
I just think it's the only way they can deal with their situation.

Some highlights from Rome and nearby towns. I'll open with a Bill Bryson quote: "You turn any street corner in Rome and it looks as if you've just missed a parking competition for blind people. Cars are pointed in every direction, half on the sidewalk and half off, facing in, facing sideways, blocking garages and side streets and phone booths, fitted into spaces so tight that the only possible way out would be through the sunroof. Romans park their cars the way I would park if I had just spilled a beaker of hydrochloric acid on my lap."

Oh, and Rome needs to repaint their pedestrian crossings. Not that, I suspect, anyone pays much attention to them anyway.
The parking rule seems to be that as long as there's a way to get around, no one really cares. But this was egregious even for Rome.
As far as crossing the streets, it seems that all you need to do is make it clear to drivers that you are going to cross the street, chiefly by stepping out in front of them. Hesitation is a chance for them to gun it and try to get around you, and assertiveness (at least in my experience) is safer than it looks.
The Roman method of parking and getting about is in many ways kinda cool. No one bothers, no one gets a ticket, and people just go about their lives. You might get blocked in once in a blue moon but that's no worse than a dreaded parking ticket which occurs several times a year for some city dwellers in the US. The Roman way of life is an anarchist's dream at least when it comes to traffic.
I've been to Rome twice, the last time 8 years ago. The place is freaking amazing. I've never seen such deep subways going to what seems like the center of the Earth. Being packed in a subway during rush hour like a sardine. Never seeing anyone pay for a bus ride. Having waiters and waitresses dance on top of empty tables for entertainment.
Too bad Italy has that persistent Mafiosa problem and you have to keep all valuables under layers of clothing.

Yeah, I generally do the same here. I trusted more that the Italian drivers were paying attention to the possibility of pedestrians in the roadway, though.
This also perfectly illustrates why pedestrian safety regulations, and how they apply to car design, are so important in many parts of the world.

I'm not necessarily defending the S60 driver since there is space to the left of the one he parked in, but sometimes handicapped people need to park like that because they need to safely be able to open their door all the way to get in or out.

Self post. We've had our available parking spaces at work reduced by 1/2, so we now have more cars than spots. So intentional bad parking pranks like this are now a regular occurance, as is parking behind someone 2-3 deep, parallel parking in front of someone else, etc.

I think you're being a bit too harsh here. The Mazda driver isn't intruding into another parking space. Just a little crooked, that's all.
Let's be reasonable about this. That's really not bad parking.

He's been charged with assault more than once. He laughs it off. I find it funny that he says "one more word and I'll punch you right in the face". "So what I did was childish but what this guy did was ok? He started it man."
No, what the guy in the truck did was childish but ultimately harmless. What you did in response, Mr. BMW Man, was a criminal act of vandalism.
Its people like this who give BMW owners a bad name. I hope the judge throws the book at him!
I love that they both took evidence before the altercation altercated.....

Not strictly a park job, but they were there, gumming up traffic (already backed up because of a road closure) for over a minute. Lots of honking there.

Wow. Laws like that are made to be unevenly enforced.
Looks like a pretty ghetto neighborhood Raza
I came out of the gas station store today and there was a huge shiny black Tundra on rims and fake off-road tires parked across two spots, one of which was handicapped, and the guy was just getting out and "polishing" an invisible rock chip on his fender with his thumb and some spit. Texas plates.

Every day this person parks like this with their nose a foot out of their space. And it is equipped with a rear parking camera.

Wouldn't want to rear collide with asphalt...
Surely it's intentional -- reasons unclear -- if it's like that every day? Unless it's always "damn, nowhere near the space again!"

Full-sized van parked in a "Compact" parking space? Idiot.
I drive a "compact" so it's not an issue but the "compact" label would never stop me from using a spot, no matter what I drove. That van is a perfect example. Fits just fine.

The spots in the lot at work are about that size. My work rig is a long bed double cab 3/4 ton truck.
At the grocery store today...saw a Tundra parked along two spaces lenghtwise. My guess is the lady was trying to pull forward into the spot but only got about halfway.
Also, some bitch was parked right in front of the store so she could load her shit, so I had to sit there and wait. Had a handicapped plate, but this woman was not handicapped one bit. Probably her mom's car running errands for her. I gave her The Stink Eye for being a lazy sumbish.

Caught this one when I was leaving the gas station the other day. I was parked a couple spots away from this guy...watched him proudly back into his spot and get out as I was backing out. I was heading the opposite way out of the parking lot, but swung back in disbelief to take the picture. He totally fucked anyone parked in the line of parking spots opposite him. I think it is intended to force them to walk around the truck and verify that the area behind it is clear for them to backup as they pick up the cones. There are usually 2 or 3 reports a year locally of people backing over small children in their own driveways. I think a lot of that is because they get into their vehicle before they open the garage door and in large vehicles their is a huge blind spot right behind the vehicle that can easily hide a toddler playing in the driveway. I try to always open my garage door so I can see what is in the driveway while I am walking around my vehicle to get in the driver's side.

But they also put a cone in front when they are backed into a spot...
I'm guessing the placement of the cones are some sort of insurance requirement.

Some of those trucks have a good size blind spot in front as well. I think they put cones up when parking along curbs just because orange catches the eye more than white. It is surprising how many times drivers run into parked vehicles. And of course requiring them to put up cones in all parking situations helps to ensure that they put them up when they are needed the most.
On a side note, I had a vehicle get run into while parked on a curb in front of my parents house. My brother came through the door and asked if I knew that a truck was parked in the back of my van. I went out and a guy from a couple of houses down had got distracted while driving down the road and drove right straight into the back of my van.

It forces the driver to actually get out and look behind the vehicle before backing up. It also prompts them to make sure they are leaving nothing behind, like tools, etc.

Why? The truck next to it probably cost more. lol
Maybe I should have replaced the / with 'or' because what I was getting at is the effectiveness of a Volt in yooper winter conditions. Granted, a good amount of that area is relatively flat but parts of it are decidedly not that flat and just seems like a Volt wouldn't do that great. Same thing with a Prius.
Then again, it could be a spectacular vehicle in snow.
It's a FWD sedan. There are a billion FWD sedans that get driven through the winter. Naturally, they're not The Best winter vehicles, but if you're not an idiot, totally manageable.
Yeah, manageable but not the best sounds about right. They have a rather low (3.5") ground clearance but the air dam is flexible and so that helps mitigate the problem. Not sure I'd like hearing the scraping sound but that's part of the design.

It's a plug-in hybrid, so you're just getting less EV-only range. Maybe 20 miles instead of 40. Still more efficient than gas, especially considering that gas mileage also declines in the winter.

Yeah I can't imagine there are that many stations up there.
Looks like the closest one around here is down in Riverside which is a solid 45 minutes away and that's if the weather is good....not very convenient. I see one Volt that the escrow lady drives but other than that, they're non existent. People prefer 4WD trucks, SUVs and Subarus instead.

Heat affects long term durability, cold affects the static discharge rate.
The Volt uses Lithium Ions, which are less susceptible to this effect than some, but they're still affected.

So that's just a decreased range due to miles peeling off while the car is parked, right? Not an irreversible degradation? If the former, that's not too terrible for a car that does still have a gas fallback.

I would guess just more a decreased efficiency. Like bugs moving slow when it's cold out, the battery doesn't work so well..
Similar to how a standard car battery may struggle to start the car on a cold morning, the cold reduces the effective juices of a hybrid's batteries as well.

I feel the same way when I see one.
But yeah, doesn't surprise me that they aren't terribly common, kinda like Arrowhead. I don't recall seeing any when I was there but that was only for ten days-ish. Nor any A4s or Audis more broadly, besides the one you had.
There are definitely more Audis around now than 5 years ago when I first got mine. Decent number of older ones, too, that largely go unnoticed.

Is it as easy to correct sliding around a corner? You sure like to do that and there were a couple times where I thought, hmm, are we gonna go sliding off into a snow bank. But that didn't happen.
With A/4WD, you get the benefit of the front wheels being able to help pull you around a corner or out of a slide a lot easier than with just RWD. Sliding corners with RWD takes a bit more delicate throttle control...too much and the rear can become the front like *that*. One nice thing about RWD is it's easier to break the tires loose, so cool moves can be done with much less throttle/speed. With AWD, you've gotta break all the tires loose and keep em loose, which makes for super fun speed slidey corners.

The 23yo I'm friends with at work found a note on the windshield of her recently purchased car, parked in the employee lot. The note read: "Sorry I damaged your car backing out. I feel like you were too close to mine." No name or address.
The irony is we get on campus at 4am when no one else is parked in that lot. Soooo, guess who parked too close to who?
QuoteThree gold supercars parked in London's Knightsbridge have been given parking tickets.
The Lamborghini Aventador, Mercedes G63 6x6 and Bentley Flying Spur, were parked with a gold Rolls Royce in Cadogan Place near the Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel.
There are two separate £80 penalty charge notices on the Lamborghini, and one each on the Mercedes and Bentley.
The cars appear to be in pay-and-display bays and risk being towed away.
The cars are believed to be Saudi Arabian-owned.

Here's one for the hate box. Not exactly parking but it ended up that way. Was there for a couple of hours and untold pictures were taken. One guy said it was the second one that day. They had smaller rocks there but people would run over them all the time, spilling them out into onto the parking lot. About a week ago they got a bigger rock and cemented it in.

Good parking isn't about following all the rules, it's about be courteous to other people and not taking up more space than you need or keeping people from parking because the space you left is too small.

The other day I did something sort of similar. Some douche was taking up 2 spots by not pulling in straight into the lines. I pulled up right on his front end which was protruding into the actual parking space I wanted. I sat there and waited for him to come out of the store. He got all flustered trying to back out so I gave him just enough room whIle giving him the evilest "wtf dude" look I could give.

I unfortunately don't have any photos, but something about people who drive Chevy trucks and parking like total clowns seems to go hand in hand where I work. There's one person with a late-model Silverado that intentionally dead-centers their truck on the line and then pulls far enough ahead that their vehicle is partially occupying 4 spaces. Another with a new Colorado parks diagonally to take up two spaces. Both of these park in the very back of the lot, too, so I suspect they are doing it to prevent door dings in their new-(ish) vehicles and I can kind of forgive it. There's another person with an older C/K 1500 who blatantly takes up two spots and they park in the front third of the lot in the aisle closest to the the door. And while the truck looks OK for a 20-ish year old vehicle, it's not like it's a show-quality vehicle that you'd care about protecting from door dings and scratches. The paint has lost much of its luster and there's some rust on it. It looks like it lived its life being used as a truck.
If they are kind enough to park way out and walk, I'm mostly cool with it.
If it's a lot that's 100% full, unforgiveable. And if they are towards the door and expect to take up everyone else's spaces? Let all the air out or something.

I fucking hate driving to Marquette...more and more roundabouts and people are fucking retarded with how to use them.

Double worthlessness points for the lame Top Gun reference.
I bet that guy thinks he's the first to make that reference.

I suppose there's some level of comfort that dickheads like this inadvertently do us a favor with these cringe red flags. Advertising to the world to stay back several car lengths.
I'd guess it's the nicest car that person has owned, therefore they parked like that to protect it.
I can see where people would not want their new vehicle dinged by some careless door opener, but they should choose a spot well away from the busy part of the lot.

Yup. I always park far away. Not just for door ding avoidance, but it's just way less stressful. People do laps and waste time trying to find a close spot...or you could just park immediately farther away and walk an extra 100'. Makes leaving much easier, too.
Healthier too, gotta get those steps

So am I. It's a good measure of a manufacturer's goodness.
If the base model is cheap & cynical you know the rest of the lineup is surface level baubles built on sand.
If the base model is well designed & thoughtful, you're okay to fish higher up the food chain.

For the first time in my life I care about door dings LOL.

My favorite is when I see someone circling to find the sweet spot and I just park in whatever's open, walk all the way to the door and they're still circling...

I must admit that, especially on days when my hip feels a bit fragile, that I will do a bit of circling to find the "closest" spot. I notice here in this smallish town though, that people are careful when opening their car doors. Even the old women.

Yup. My dad is sort of one of those people. He's sort of an anxious driver to begin with, finding a parking spot ramps it up for him. Always funny when I'm riding in the backseat with my parents to go to dinner or something and dad starts scoping out parking spots trying to find one nice and close while he drives right past easy-access open spots and starts the "hm, could park there...there's a spot..." Eventually my mom will say something like "oh Michael just park the car."
It used to kill me seeing people circling around the LA Fitness parking lot - cruising for a primo space close to the entrance.

Wait till your hips give out.
That is a legitimate reason, though. For most people, it's like some sort of "game" to win to get the closest spot.

My hips give out, along with my knees, ankles, and back. I don't even park at the gym.
